Why are Stalybridge called Celtic? Were they founded by Irish immigrants too?

Glasgow Celtic are the best

They have the same surname as Stalybridge and they wear green n white - what's not to like?

(Tho, to be fair, hyow many towns other than Alty had a pub named after their ground?)

Glasgow Celtic have some scummy fans - I work with some.
Glasgow Rangers have some scummy fans - I work with some.
For every scummy Celtic fan there is a scummy Rangers fan.
For every scummy Rangers fan there is a scummy Celtic fan.

Those two clubs are not typical though.  They both represent, still, religious groupings and national identities.  That takes them above and beyond clubs merely representing a city, a borough or a town.

Feel free to claim Glasgow Celtic are the biggest club in Britain, the irony being that their fans by an overwhelming majority don't want to be part of Britain.

As it happens any decent Glaswegian would be a Partick Thistle fan as it is they who have graced Moss Lane.

Football is about sport not religion, anyone who thinks differently need to get into the real world and grow up.

Sick to death of relegion in the world tbh.

Agree totally.  This is what leaves me totally perplexed by Glaswegian footy (and other parts of Scotland).

In a way I think it's a fascinating thing for a sporting team to begin to mean something above and beyond a load of blokes kicking a bag of air around. Celtic represents Irish Nationalism and Rangers British Unionism. If you take away the religious bigotry - and let's remember you don't have to be a bigot to be a nationalist or unionist - it's probably nice to belong to something that feels kind of special.

Barcelona and Atletico Bilbao fans obviously feel the same, with their teams representing Catalan and Basque Nationalism respectively.

I don't think either set of Old Firm supporters are better or worse than the other. Rangers' songs arguably veer more into the religious than the political, but is "Up to our knees in Fenian blood" more offensive than pro-IRA chants?

Meh.

Not saying anyone is better than the other, but I know of a few protestant Celtic fans, but not one catholic Rangers fan. Of course over here all manner of people can be seen wearing Celtic jerseys which is probably more of a reflection on what your average Irish footy fan thinks of their native league teams than anything else. Bizarrely on Irish television the pundits regularly include ex-Rangers men (Souness and Trevor Steven), but no ex Celtic that I can think of at the moment.
