Altrincham FC First Team / Re: Table position
« on: Yesterday at 03:51:12 PM »
I was going to start a post like this but didn't want to spook things, especially as we just started a rather tough run of away games.

If we hold our position through the next 3 weeks, I will be very confident. Winning yesterday at Gateshead, and the manner of the win, fills me with cautious optimism.

Making L2 and the National League regional has been suggested before on this forum I think - and obviously it gets more appealing the more it feels like we wouldn't be bottom feeders in that structure.

But I get the feeling they'd never go for it. Not really sure why though.

It might be something to do with the money to the FL from both the Premier League and TV deals being split between more clubs. Hard to say whether this reduced % share would be more or less offset by the bigger crowds and reduced costs of an enlarged regional structure. I suspect not, given that it hasn't happened.

Altrincham FC First Team / Re: Main Stand
« on: February 05, 2025, 08:58:20 AM »
If the main stand is not fully occupied on match days , which judging by recent photos it isn't, would it be feasable to remove some of the rows to increase the leg room ?
Yes this has been looked at already, NB the back half of the stand has about 3" more leg room than the front half due to the way it was built in the 1960's.
You do realise you've just blown a well kept extra leg room secret? 😱

So Business Class seats are at the rear????? ;D

Altrincham FC First Team / Re: FA Trophy Quarter Final Draw - Rochdale (A)
« on: February 05, 2025, 08:42:28 AM »
Sadly their biggest crush of games is four in eleven days starting with our game with them so they won't be too knackered when we play them unfortunately.

From the older (and better in many ways) website, we have our own tricky run of away games to contend with :-

The sequence, after Saturday's home game against Braintree Town, is now as follows...

Tue.11.2.25 Oldham Athletic (A)
Sat.15.2.25 Gateshead (A)
Tue.18.2.25 Hartlepool United (A)
Sat.22.2.25 AFC Fylde (H)
Sat.1.3.25 Rochdale (A) FA Trophy tie which replaces the planned home league game with Solihull Moors.
Tue.4.3.25 York City (A)
Sat.8.3.25 Southend United (A)
Tue.11.3.25 Rochdale (A)
Currently the above sequence is followed by a run of five games, four of which are at home!

Like everyone else here, I will be biased in favour of this change. With all the other issues in the sport at the moment, I am doubtful that this will be a priority for the new regulator, but let's see.

In favour of this I believe may be the economics of getting out of National League and into League 2. If you believe "The Price of Football" Podcast, a National league side is worth maybe ?2m-?3m in overall value if you wanted to buy one. However the same podcast reckons that to guarantee promotion you need to spend ?3m that season i.e. more than the value of the club !! So adding an extra promotion place reduces hopefully this cost, however obviously increases the chance that clubs on lower budgets drop straight back down.

Controvertially, there is a school of thought that says that League 1 and League 2 should become North/South feeder leagues into the Championship. Crowds would increase, costs would decrease (as would carbon footprint) and the game would become more financially viable. I think politically this might be challenging to implement, but the logic is compelling.

I watched us play on some horrific pitches in the 80's. But in those days we had John King and the boys who were never going to be put off by a little bit of mud/snow/fog/being knee'd in the balls by a goalkeeper.

pitch looks just fine to me. We just need to buy one of those brown footballs we used to see in the 70's and 80's  ;D

Anyone got a pic of the old Maunders logo kit??? I seem to recall that was one of the best ever. We should start a "best ever kit appreciation" thread :)

I hate to be negative as I know everyone involved in the club works so hard and has the best interests od the club at heart, but this one would be on a separate thread of "worst ever Alty kits" I think the style of the logo with the weird smile makes it harder than other logo's. The J Davidson logo was kinda cooler, so that made it easier to design around.

Hope it sells well as the extra income obviously helps the player budget.

Hadn't heard of him before so went straight to Wiki and learnt some really interesting facts.

He played in the 1958 World Cup in Sweden as a result of the death or Roger Byrne in the Munich Air Disaster. This was Pele's first world cup. England were in the same group as Brasil, USSR and Austria and drew all 3 games...from wiki it seems that this group was a "group of death"...

"Despite the disappointments of the previous tournaments, Brazil were considered extremely powerful, as would prove to be the case. The Soviet Union were the 1956 Olympic champions and Austria had won the bronze medal in the 1954 World Cup in Switzerland, four years earlier. And although England, weakened by the loss of several players at the Munich air disaster, were not considered at their very best, they were still always a formidable team.....The quality of the football in this group did not quite live up to expectations, however. Only 15 goals were scored in the whole group, only one more than Group 3. And when England and Brazil drew 0?0, it was the first time in World Cup history that a game ended goalless. It was also the first time Brazil had failed to score in a World Cup finals match."

As England finished on exact same points and goals as USSR this went to a play off which England lost 1-0. But it must have been a pretty decent England side to hold the ultimate winners to a 0-0 draw. England were the only side in the tournament not to lose to Brasil.

It sounds like Alty were lucky to get such an accomplished defender, albeit for only 2 years. Can any of our elder members recount what that Alty team was like? Were these good years for the club?

If we win tomorrow, it would be shocking for us not to make the play-offs given that our remaining 3 games are against sides all in the bottom 6.

Oldham need to come out fighting. They have had a very poor run and this is last chance saloon for them. I have bad memories of the FA Cup game earlier this season which we marginally deserved to win but they came away with a 1-0 victory. Could be a tense afternoon for both sets of fans.

Massive win - almost all the other top teams dropped points also.

Looking forward (nervously) to Monday. A win against Oldham more or less guarantees playoffs
