It would be interesting to know the exact details how many times we take the lead and surrender it opposed to kicking on and getting another goal. The psychology of it probably means that surrendering the lead/not protecting a draw sticks in the memory more due to the nature that you lose points from winning positions.
I understand there?s far more to it than just the way PP and the team go about things and the other team want to win just as much as us but I can?t help but think Parky?s negative tactics don?t help things. First half last night we were in control of the game for the vast majority of the half with the play deep in the Barnet half. Contrast that with the second half and we rarely got into their half. This must come from the coaching staff. Newby, Linney and Humbles were our best three players last night and they were all brought off. At the point the ball went out for their throw in, the players on the pitch were far more defensive minded than the players that started the game.
Trying to defend a lead/protect a point does not work for us at the moment and I think the possession based ?philosophy? is counter productive for defending a lead/point. With the exception of Pep and Man City no team are capable of keeping a team at bay by playing out from the back. If we are going to protect a point then when we get the ball it needs clearing as far from our goal as possible. It?s not pretty no but sometimes you need to win ugly. I can?t remember a time when we have won ugly.
The set piece thing has been done to death and it seems the club has every off field position covered apart from a set piece coach. Maybe the budget won?t cover it but surely one of the coaching staff can go on a course or add another string to their bow. We are like a Sunday league team in both boxes from set pieces.
I wish PP wasn?t so stubborn with the possession based football and was more bold with the tactical changes in-game. Yes Banet and Ebbsfleet are totally different animals but we took the lead in both games and dominated the play for 45 mins in both games. The psychology of playing the second half has to be the same for both games. ?Happy with a point?, ?it?s a good point away from home? shouldn?t come into it. We should aim to win and do everything we can to win games of football.
Credit where credit is due, we are worlds apart from where we were when PP came in I?m just a little concerned that we might be starting to stagnate and not learning some very simple lessons from games.
