The old Bedford Town were one of the Southern League leading lights before going bust in the 1970s . They reached rhe 4th round of the cup in 64 and 66 beating the likes of Newcastle away and Brighton. I remember their game v Everton in 66 being televised with over 18,000 at the Eyrie . They were regularly chasing FL status and back then higher up the pecking order than Wigan and others !
Since then there have been many top non league clubs who have either bitten the dust or almost disappeared down the pyramid , remember the likes of Romford , Kingstonian , Enfield , Kettering , Worcester , Telford , Stafford , Nuneaton Boro , Bangor , Runcorn and Vics of course. We had great battles with most of those back in the day ,famous non league clubs with long and proud histories . not so with the likes of Salford, Crawley, Harrogate , Bromley , Rushden etc , who came from nowwhere and bought their pass nto the promised land. Talk about being in the right place.....
