If you had the choice....
« on: January 17, 2010, 05:20:53 PM »

The football fates tell you that Alty will go to wembley this year and you get to choose - playoff final or Trophy final?  which would you pick?

I assume most of us would pick the playoffs.

What if the choice was winning the trophy or losing the playoff final (your memory is wiped after you make the choice so you still enjoy the trip)?

I think I'd still go for the playoff, the excitement of a league season where we finish that high and the dream at the end of it would be fantastic even if it eventually didn't come off.

What would you choose?

Winning the Trophy.

Not only would it be a great occasion but it would set the club up for future promotion bids and also hopefully wake the town up a bit.

I reckon the town would pay more attention to the prospect of us becoming a league team and the media stories that would generate rather than a trophy many have never heard off.  Are we likely to generate more cash from the two legged semi and end of season bumper gates than a trophy run?

much prefer a wemberley final, but like earlier posts the media interest in the trophy isnt great, if we were in then playoffs the media coverage would be much bigger being part time with a chance of league 2, also i do think  a two legged playoff final financially would not be that far behind a trophy final, so if i had to choose playoff it is.

Trophy final.....coz we'd have no doubts about what would happen if we won...and the trophy is special.

This opens a whole new can of worms....if we did make the play off final......would we really be ready for football league?...I actually think we'd survive in the FL mainly due to the poorness of the teams at the bottom.

If we made the football league we would have to properly appeal for investors.

Small investors who want to be part of something special, not nutters who promise 40,000 all seater stadiums and Premier League in 10 years

A very good point - however, no club has ever taken the step up to FL status successfully, and remained part time. We'd need serious major sponsorship - and I can't think of an obvious source.

If we went up, I think we'd be thinking of a season in the sun with a brave relegation fight rather than looking to establish long term.

That said, with the gap between the two leagues as small as it is, going up from the conference indicates that you're not going to be league two fodder.

Play-off final for me, league football even on a limited budget is every non league club's dream (well maybe mine), more media coverage and maybe the odd mr moneybags would show some interest. Alty at the new Wembley magnificent  ;D

It's got to be the FA Trophy and a trip to Wembley for me

Surely the club would make more money on a decent cup run and trip to Wembley which could then be reinvested in the team to win the BSP the following season ??

I am greedy and would love us to make both the Trophy final and the playoffs..  If we can keep the squad fit then its not beyond the realms of possibility...
