Anyone know what the rules are about a sub coming on and taking a throw in, because when Clee came on the ref wouldnt allow him to take the throw , Buzz ask him why but dont know what he said to him

This is a slight grey area. If the intention to make the substitution is clear BEFORE a set piece is awarded, there appears to be nothing in the rules to stop the sub taking said set piece. If a substitution is rushed into place to patently take advantage of an already awarded set piece - especially a penalty - then there appears to be a difference in interpretation. Is there a qualified refereee in the house ? Or maybe Colin "I read rule books in bed" Peake ?

There is nothing in law as far as I know which states he cannot, just pickiness by the ref I think

Indeed there is nothing to prevent a player coming on as a substitute restarting play in any way even a penalty as has happened quite regularly.

Where it may not be permitted is where a player who is on the field of play has already been nominated to or is ready to take the restart and it might reasonably be thought that getting the player coming on to take it is a time wasting action
