TOMMY MAGUIRE

From the main site: "It is with deep regret that Altrincham FC learnt of the death this week of one of its longstanding supporters, Tommy Maguire. At the time of his death, Tommy, who would have been 91 next month, was still running his successful window-blind shop on Washway Road, Sale and until a few weeks ago had still been attending matches at Moss Lane. In fact, Tommy had also been a regular at Altrincham away matches until a year or so ago, making use of the supporters' coach.

A great character, Tommy had himself been a part-time footballer in his youth and had played on several of the grounds that Altrincham visited in recent years. He had served in the Royal Navy during the War and, until his late eighties, he had been an accomplished cyclist, covering long distances in the saddle. In his latter years he had made use of a tandem. Tommy was also a regular at the Manchester casinos and had an appreciation of good food and of professional standards of service. Even when attending football matches he wore a smart suit, collar and tie."

I did not know Mr Maguire, but he sounds like an extraordinary, accomplished and classy man - another sad loss to the Alty family.

Our thoughts go to his family & friends.

Tom Maguire was a great fella.  I had many a chat with him on away coaches and he was a very interesting bloke with loads of stories to tell.

He didn't have a TV because there was "bugger all" on it...and every year he can to convince the TV licence people that he didn't have one!

He took great pleasure in watching Alty and he certainly told you if you he thought it was rubbish.

RIP Tom...a damn nice bloke.

What a lovely guy.

I remember having a chat with him at a pre-season friendly at Chorley in 2004.He told me that he had played at Victory Park for Manchester Schoolboys around 1930!!!!!!!!!!!!

He was still running his business until relatively recent times & he had his lunch pretty well everyday in Pacinos on Washway Road in Sale. Whenever I went in there he was always there with his napkin tucked into his collar.

The point made about his dress standards reflecting his life standards was very apt.He was also completely all there in his nineties.....not too many Alty fans can say that!

If I could describe Tommy with one word it would be....debonair.

Rock on Tommy!

I didn't know Tommy very well at all but I remember talking to him a few times when we were waiting for the supporter's coach at The Vine. He was a very nice man indeed.

RIP Tommy.
