One for our Resident Referee

From the AFCW forum about their game at FGR, is this true? I can't recall seeing a keeper in short sleeves.

Hello Denzil and Dai. Good to meet you in the Green Man after the game. Glad you enjoyed your visit despite our defeat. At least you saw plenty of goals! Interesting point from Dai who's been a football referee of some 21 years standing. He reckoned that the Wombles goalie was incorrectly attired and we have grounds for complaint. Apparently, goalkeepers are always supposed to wear long-sleeved shirts (which the Womble wasn't) so that in goalmouth incidents, the ref can tell if its the goalie who handles the ball.

I'm no ref, but I am sure they have a point.

Cue Shoot magazine "Ask the ref" quote from upset footballer: "Oy! Ref! %&£^"$%!"

If you put sky sports 1 on now Tranmeres keeper has a short sleeved top on. Fabian Barthez used to wear short sleeved tops in goal regularly.

keepers wear different coloured jerseys to help the officials identify that it is THEY who have handled the ball - I'm not sure that there is any requirement in the laws of the game about sleeves however.

It was once the case but not for a few years.

Players cannot/could not be prevented from rolling their sleeves up which gave the same effect as short sleeves.

It is still the case however that shirts must have sleeves

Also the gloves are normally a give away that it's the keeper.

Typical FGR....I'm sure a certain weasel has been through the rule book with a fine tooth comb and if it had been against any regulation then the club would have had a sneaky e-mail asking us to support having AFCW thrown out of the league and FGR awarded the 3 points.
