John Murray RIP
« on: August 29, 2009, 09:08:46 AM »

For those of you who knew him, John Murray (our dad) passed away at 6.55am today, having suffered for the past 2 years with an aggressive form of dementia.
Dad followed Alty for the last 40 years and, even with his health problems over the last year or so, continued to be a regular at home and away games.
He will be sadly missed by many - let's hope Alty win at Kiddy today for dad!!!!!

That is very sad news. May I add my condolences to those already posted.

My first memory of John was at the FA Cup 1st Round tie at Halifax in 1975. The Shay was oval shaped then & we were stood on a very rickety terrace at the end of the ground where away fans are still housed.I seem to remember John giving Micky Moore quite a bit of stick.

As well as being a great fan, John did a lot of work for many years ensuring that the Football Club accounts were in order.

God Bless You John.

Sad news, my thoughts are with all of the Murray family at this time.

As Pete says, another one of the people I looked up to when growing up as an Alty fan passes on.  John was always at the game, where ever it was.

And if there was a rule or regulation he didn't agree he certainly let people know!

Many people don't know that he used to spend hours on end doing the technical side of the accounts in the offices at Alty as well, I've often seen him shaking his head at some of the "accounting" during Mr Bermans time.

RIP John, you'll be missed by many.

Again, coming from a similar angle as Ecky, Hughesy and Joe, John Murray was a good bloke who I grew up kind of knowing and had the odd chat with over many years at Alty games. I perhaps think of him at a rather dismal away game at Kettering advising Gerry Quinn that in a team with zero attacking capabilities that our one creative player Clive Freeman really ought not to be sta on the bench.

When we talk about Alty being a family I think of the people like John who I've grown to share experiences with over the years, this includes Mark and Alan who were fans we sort of looked up to when starting out at Alty and to whom I extend my deepest sympathies.

And as Ecky says earlier, a man who has done his bit over the years to ensure the club we love has continued to evolve. Sadly, he now joins the rather too quickly expanding heaven branch of Alty supporters and we wish the Murray clan well.

RIP John. Good man.
