Today's Alty Trivia Question
« on: May 09, 2009, 05:11:16 PM »

Probably an easy one....but at least it's topical after last night's result:

Name the last player to score a goal for Alty against Gateshead.

I think it is Nick Welton but prefer to think back to Bomber wheeling away in celebration after sealing our promotion there in 1999 :-D

Indeed, Nick Welton was that man.

He scored two late goals in a 2-1 FA Trophy First Round win at Gateshead on 1st November 2003.

Surely it was Andy Lovelock's goal at home to Emley that secured promotion?

Some may think that, but it was truly Bomber's header at the Heed. What a magnificent site that was, one of my all time favourite Alty players having comeback from injury making it sure and wheeling away with a huge smile on his face!

Got to agree with Ballers here. When Bomber(also one of my favourite ever Alty players) scored at Gateshead and wheeled away around the running track we were on our way up.

Technically, neither Ricky Harris's goal nor Andy Lovelock's secured promotion. We were effectively promoted on Saturday April 24th, a day that we didn't have a game.Worksop beat Guiseley 3-1 & that meant that barring a virtually impossible swing in goal difference between Guiseley & ourselves, that we were guaranteed a top two place....& therefore promotion as neither Worksop nor Guiseley had the necessary ground grading to gain promotion.

It was the goals that defeated Frickley 3-0 the following tuesday that guranteed promotion.......but of course it was Ricky's goal at Gateshead that secured it in most Alty fans' minds........a truly memorable moment with the enduring image of Bomber hurdling an advertising hoarding to celebrate in front of the Alty fans who travelled in great numbers that day.

We had more than Guisley at the Worksop game!
