The ex Irish internation we had in the late 60s i think,or Gary Sprake of Leeds,he was worse than David James aways dropping clangers like throwing the ball into his own goal

Bobby Irvine was that guilty man.

Endured a nightmare in a 4-2 home defeat against Wigan in the FA Cup in October 1966....and I don't think he ever played for Alty again...?

I believe that he went on to play for Telford United for quite a few seasons.

Still got the programme from the next home game. Can't be bothered to dig it out, but Freddie Pye in the managers notes said something like ... I can't understand a goalkeeper with international experience making such mistakes. He will not do so again in an Altrincham jersey. His contract was cancelled over the weekend.

As far as the worst kepper, it's GOT to be Peter Frankish.
Absolutely no F***ing question about that.

I think that he was in goal for Telford in the two F.A. Trophy ties that we played against them in 1972.

He was. And he played well too!

Chorley's portly keeper in the 1997/98 season. I can't remember his name but Ecky kept calling him "PIG" whenever he touched the ball!  :D

Think the Chorley keeper in question may have been Simon Marsh.

I always thought Alan Zelem at Macc was pretty useless.

Memories of his reaction when Nigel Shaw tucked a penalty past him at the Moss Rose in an FA Cup tie during the 1990/91 season always raise a smile.....!

Peter Wragg: "If that was a penalty, the game's gone for me"

Interviewer: "What about the replay John, what do you think?"

Kingy: "I don't think there'll be any penalties in the replay"

Marvellous!

Bobby Irvine actually played for Northern Ireland and got the first of his 8 caps while playing for Linfield in the early 60's.
We also had an Irish Goalkeeper in around 1964 called Mick Smyth who was brilliant for us and ex Man U trialist but went back to live in Dublin going on to play twice for the Republic of Ireland.
Worst keeper ever has to be Paddy Roche who Manchester United signed from Shelbourne as a replacement for Alex Stepney in the mid 70's.
Known as the Galic Fish, his clangers cost United vital points that could have won the League title and also a clanger for Ireland against Switzerland put paid to Euro qualification. Due to Paddy's form Gary Bailey got his chance at United at a very young age for a Goalkeeper. Paddy lived in Sale, and I was told was a lovely bloke, but thankfully was not one of the many ex-United keepers that came to Alty afterwards.
