What's your favourite Altrincham FC on Boxing Day experience?
« on: December 24, 2008, 12:03:10 AM »

Plenty of memories on this list:

I'd have to select this fixture:

26th December 1978

Macclesfield Town...1
Altrincham...5

Attendance: 1,105.

What better way is there to spend Boxing Day than to see the Robins trounce Macclesfield on their own ground?

The Alty goalscorers were John Rogers (2); Jeff Johnson; Graham Heathcote (pen) and Barry Howard.

Halcyon days.....and then Spurs away in the FA Cup to look forward to!

I think most people are going to say Northwich 3-0 at Moss Lane given that we've only won ONE  :o Boxing Day Conference fixure in the past 20 Years!!!

*gulps*

p.s. Jeff Johnson eh, wouldn't it be superb to see him in action at Moss Lane?

Wasn't that 3-0 win at Runcorn in 1998 the game in which Coburn actually scored and later saved a penalty?

I can recall Bernard Taylor's fancy slip-on shoes being caked in mud as he slithered near the dugout on the touchline!

The only time his shoes ever got muddy.

I was joined at the Macc game by a couiple of classmates from school who lived in the Greater Macclesfield area, which was satisfying.  We were 5-0 up into the last 10 minutes and took our foot of the gas.

The return match was embarrasing - delayed to the beginning of May.  By then the title was out of reach but I had hopes we'd score 8 in a bid for 100 league goals in a season.  Macc would not be joining us in the conference because you couldn't qualify by finishing BOTTOM of the NPL.  but we didn't score 8 - we lost 1-0 in lacklustre match, before a 3-0 win at Gateshead on the Thursday (the day  Thatcher came to power) and a 3-1 loss at Southport on the final Saturday (they also didn't join the APL - because "it wouldn't work")

The 5-4 win at Bangor City in 1980 was pretty special, particularly as we won 4-0 at Barrow on the NEXT DAY!

Brian,

That would've been up there for me also:

Game in Bangor, Bleeding Wolf in Hale til closing time, pub burns down overnight, up early doors to Barrow

Goals by Rogers 4, Heathcote 2, Johnson, Whitbread, Barrow - so 3 by the current management team.

And sorry Alty 2008 but ALL of them would be straight in the team today!  How did we ever lose with firepower like that?
