As you've mentioned Kendal, got to say that you're lucky people just spell your name wrong.  Whenever we travel away we're lucky ifanyone even knows where Kendal is!!  Best of luck to Alty for the season by the way, especially the Gazelle.

Excuse me but Liverpool is the city of culture is it not..........Oh sorry can't have Liverpool and culture in same sentance can you.
To add to all this local agricultural history, Clibrans was the company who had the site in Delaheys Road and other in Hale and Hale Barns. They were seed merchants and devoloped many vegetables with local names eg Timperley Early Rhubarb etc. They also had a plant and gardening shop in Altrincham when I was knee high to a grasshopper, and Walter Jones was our star centre forward.

Historically Altrincham was spelt with a "G".
Alt = High
Tring = was the clan leader of the town ( I think)
Ham = Village
So it became Altringham = meaning the village on the hill run by Tring. But was subsequently changed to Altrincham.

I thought it used to be Altrinchampions?
I'm sure it used to be that in the mid 60's - in fact I've still got a paper car sticker which says that tucked into one of my old scrapbooks.  ;)
I believe the name was abbreviated after the early 80's.  ::)

I get the same in Scotland as well as the: "Who do you support again? Aldershot/Accrington?"

Even more horrific is the spelling of Bowdon with an e.

The cheek of it.

Disgusted of, er, Bowdon

I used to live on 'Bowden View Lane'

I often wondered why it was spelled incorrectly, but maybe someone just got it wrong when registering the road or town. Now the big question is, which one is right? I wont sleep until this is resolved!
