Historically Altrincham was spelt with a "G".

Alt = High
Tring = was the clan leader of the town ( I think)
Ham = Village

So it became Altringham = meaning the village on the hill run by Tring.

But was subsequently changed to Altrincham.

Even more horrific is the spelling of Bowdon with an e.

The cheek of it.

No we are not but seriously stop being so pedantic - jeez I thought a little history might actually be of interest to some people.

Well I found it interesting. Although I thought Altrincham was in a kind of valley, not on a hill !

I think the hill bit refers to the old market place which was the centre of the town.

Also if you are at lymm roundabout you can see the tower of St Margarets chuch up on the hill. The town was used as a vantage point to view the land around

I will get my coat !!!

The church you can see on the top of the hill from the Lymm roundabout is St. Mary's in Bowdon, and St. Margaret's strictly speaking is in Dunham Massey (if only just).

The "C" came about because when all towns in England had to be registered, Alty's town clerk mispelt the name, I think this was in the 18th centuy but could have been as late as the 19th Century. A history of the name of the town can be found in the book "Bygone Altrincham"

Alt - is a Latin term (altus) while ham is saxon.

Local historian Basil Morrison once told me that he used to say in talks that the soil was like custard so was good for the rhubarb.

Incidently the Webb lettuce originated in Kendal and there is (was) an Altrincham carrot
