Top 5 Alty Hardnuts?
« on: February 23, 2008, 01:41:35 AM »

1951-2 Team (See Official Site)

Moss Lane was a bit la-di-dah Gunner Graham in '52 -  a trainer called Masseur and 2 Polish players? Still, I bet Biffer Smith took no prisoners.

Was Biffer harder than these:-

1. John King - Ossie's Nightmare
2. Gerry Casey - slow, average in the air but seemed to know most NPL refs by their first name
3. Stan Allan - used to pick fights with the oppositions' best players and get them sent off
4. Graham Heathcote - similar to Stan apart from the getting their players sent off bit
5. Lennie Dickinson - chinned a Macc player at Edgeley park in a CSC semi

I'd give Andy Green a game there.

Eddie Bishop. Good player but permanently on the verge of committing GBH.

Can't really comment on years gone by so i'd say Andy Green, such a good goalscorer but a hothead, seem to recall him smashing a changing room door in at Dover or Dagenham after being sent off.
Ricky Harris was a big lad as well.

Quite telling the mad dog isn't suggested.....proves my theory that he is a big softy really...he's just a puppy in wolves clothing.

From what i remember I'd have kingy and casey top in terms of hard tackling deliberate fouls, jabs uppercuts etc.

For nutter value I'd go carl furlong.

How about this line-up for a collection of, ahem, 'competitive' players?

Admittedly, they would collect a few yellow and red cards along the way.....but you wouldn't fancy playing aganst this team on a cold and wet evening in February......

1. John Wood
Lunatic goalkeeper brought to Moss Lane from Rossendale United by Les Rigby.
I recall that he was far better at punching opposition players than the ball.
A few years after leaving Alty, didn't he get sent off whilst playing against us in a friendly for throwing a punch at John Rogers?

2. Stan Allan

Eamonn O'Keefe's best mate.

3. Barry Knowles

Psychotic former Wigan Athletic left full-back who was at Alty in the late 1980s.

4. Bobby Fraser

As (justly) proposed by Alty Tunnel Steward.
Even though he was aged about 60 by the time John Williams signed him for Alty, he was still a fearsome, gnarled character.

5. Gerry Casey
Identified by no less an authority than John King himself as the hardest player he ever came up against.
Enough said.

6. John King
Simply, a Non League legend.
Somebody really should write a book about his exploits.
Mind you, he could play a bit, too!

7. Eddie Bishop
Fearless and terrifying at times.

8. Paul Ellender
Sheer physical presence and strength.
Inspirational.

9. Andy Green
Plenty of ability but mad as a goose on stilts.
Permanently only seconds away from a red card.

10. Ken McKenna
Not to be messed with.
Quality striker.

11. Joe Flaherty
The legendary hothead himself!
Best remembered for (i) scoring but subsequently being sent off at Moss Lane in the FA Trophy semi-final second leg against Scarborough in April 1977; (ii) getting himself booked only 20 seconds after coming on as a substitute in the 1978 FA Trophy Final at Wembley against Leatherhead.

Subs. Jeff Johnson; Danny Adams; Graham Barrow; Lennie Dickinson; Mick Carmody.

Watching the 1986 trophy final dvd Bobby Fraser dishes out some treatment that wouldn't be allowed in todays game.

That said an honourable mention here for Eddie Hussin and Val Owen (with support from messrs Maddox, Talbot and Adams) for their absolute hatchet job on Yemi Odubade in the play off final.

First keeper I remember is Willie Mailey, not the tallest but he had a right temper on him!

I think he left and went to Macc, I recall a serious exchange of views on the pitch between him and a few blokes after one game.

Cult of, that is quality!

Andy Green descrisption is perfect!

I remember he came on as a sub once when we were 3-0 up and got a straight red for elbowing a defender in the face. He'd just come back from a 3 game ban too. LEGEND!
