the BIGGEST alty game?
« on: January 25, 2008, 11:13:56 AM »

just a question a few of us were having the other day and thought i'd gather more opinions, "what is the biggest game in altrincham fc history?" basically interms of significance.

i've only been watching alty for 4 years or so, so i don't rele feel i can voice an opinion but i am interested to hear other peoples views.

My first big game was V Wigan in the FA Cup 2nd round (I think??)  I was just a wee nipper and remember Chris Sharratt maurading down the wing!!

In the FA Cup has to be Knocking Birmingham city out of the 3rd round. They were in division1 which was the 'Premier league ' of that area.

Winning the FA trophy at Wembley in 1978 - What a super game we played that day Johnson, Rogers and Kingy sending us to victory.

Winning the innaugral Conference (alliance premier league) was an awesome achievement. We should have been promoted that season!

Them were the days! ;D

In terms of importance and where we are today the final Unibond game v Runcorn that assured us of Conf North football is very significant in modern times. What would've happened if we missed the cut that day, I shudder to think.

Crazy question, but a good one. I think this one is down to personal opinion, each to their own and all that.

For me it was Eastbourne at the Brittania. There were quite a few painful memories of the past decade for alty and that win put a silver lining on all of them for me and quite a few others. We've not looked back since really, and the recent moans and groans we've had really put into perspective how far we've come compared to the moans and groans of a decade ago.

Im bubbling up just thinking about it!

Having been to all the big cup / trophy games the BIGGEST game was 1-0 Runcorn to secure Conf North status - we could still be in the Uinbond if it wasn't for that win...

On the flip side though, how about Slough Town away in 1991?

You're not allowed to mention Slough Town away on the Tuesday night.

Runcorn and Eastbourne are the two biggies for me...and the kidderminster match when we needed a win to stay up and drew 0-0.

Surprised no-one has mentioned Tottenham in 1995 though.  That was massive as well.

How about away at BPA in April in the Conf north. Val & Rod's late, late goals made me think that maybe we could do it.....

No question. Liverpool in 1981. Liverpool at the height of their powers. Altrincham the top non-league team in the country.

i was at all those fa cup, trophy and alliance premier league games, but the runcorn match and the eastbourne match are the most significant. not the best games or the biggest games, but the ones which changed the destiny of the club

Eastbourne was a big game but I thought we always had a chance so perhaps the game against nuneaton or the fantastic game against kettering with the own goal counts more for me.
Again the runcorn game was a bit bizzare as they qualified as well.
So kettering BSN playoff final.
