Red Cards....
« on: January 16, 2008, 10:13:31 PM »

Right... this has bugged me for several years and came to light when I saw Rennie send off Emre at Newcastle tonite. Why do some referees carry circular red cards ? All yellow ones are the same oblonged shape but red cards are either that or circular ? Anyone know why, just bugs me, as do a lot of things :-)

It's a FIFA directive in case some players are colour blind.

I thought that... only as well as visual the referees  normally follows it up with a verbal comment such as 'your off son !'

Some Referees carry both Red and Yellow Cards in the same pocket.

Yellow Cards are generally rectangular in shape whilst Red Cards are elliptical (sort of round)

This facilitates the Ref getting the correct card out of his pocket without having to get them both out and look, particularly useful when a quick dismissal may just defuse a situation (e.g. the sending off of the Havant & Waterlooville player in the first match v Swansea).

I (and a number of other Referees at many, many levels) have a Yellow in my Left Pocket (L= Leave them on), a Red in my Right Pocket and another Red in either my back pocket or my shirt pocket in addition to the cards in my 'book'

Hope this answered your question

I thought that originally the red was always kept in the back pocket and so if the ref reached for his back pocket you knew an early bath was on the cards. Is that right?

If so why has it changed?

Ta, ATS

yeh i agree that many referees tend to carry the red in the back pocket, hence when you see the ref reach there the player is normally halfway down the tunnel.

That changed because some of our more rotund officials in the lower league had virtually spray on tight shorts and in a Sunday Cup game in Essex a player had to wait in excess of 15 minutes to be sent off as the card was stuck in the ref's back pocket.

There is no hard and fast rule about what is kept where.

Admittedly a good few Referees keep a Red Card in the Back Pocket. This is sometimes for use when issuing a 'straight red' whereas the (other) red kept in the right pocket of the shorts can be used when issuing a second yellow (and subsequent red)

It's all down to personal choice I suppose
