National League Cup
« on: September 19, 2024, 03:23:23 PM »

Details have been put on the website regarding this new competition with Alty having games v Utd, Stoke and Wolves U21 teams. Quotes from Bill are pretty enthusiastic for it, but surely we aren't going to risk playing many first team players in these games. Potentially useful for players who aren't getting many minutes on the pitch, but apart from that for me it seems a bit pointless. Of course this is why the National League backed the Premier League in supporting the decision to drop FA Cup replays in the competition proper.

Good from a networking perspective I suppose - gives us the chance to look at potential loanees within these U21 squads if we ever need them.

We already have decent relationships with United and Stoke, but Wolves could be an opportunity maybe.

The overall response has been massiveley negative. Can't see it lasting more than one season

To be frank, I think it's financially attractive but from a fans perspective is it any more attractive than the Cheshire Senior Cup?
I'd be very surprised if the crowds were more than the mid hundreds.

Shambles tbh. No one cares, it's been said since the start and how have Solihull avoided being in this? How have Braintree been included?

Joke of a competition.

I hope every fan boycotts it and it dies a quick death.

I struggle to see any tangible benefits at all to be honest. Marple mentioned that it may give us the chance to establish loan links with some clubs, but that's about it really and we should really emphasise the word 'may'.

To be honest, I've already forgotten about it.

The top 16 of the NL qualify but if any opt out (like Solihull) they are replaced with the next highest club. For all the negativity, a minimum of four additional home games with 100% of the gate receipts to be kept by the club plus a million quid in prize money to be shared with just 15 other NL clubs is pretty decent incentive to take part and to advance as far as we can in this competition. It's more reliable than hoping for an FA Cup replay, which is what it replaces.

It's 8k for a win, It probably costs that to turn the floodlights on and open the hospitality.

I'm disgusted that as a club after putting out such a strong statement around the FA cup shambles have not stood up and said "f**k the PL" If York, Solihull, Southend, Barnet & Eastleigh all got away with not being involved why didn't we? The answer to that is we simply didn't put up a fight. It's one thing to vote against the competition at an AGM but we still bent over and asked "how deep Mr PL?". Why we as a club choose to bend to the will of a league that has continuously f**ked the teams in the league over and over. What happened to "we will beat you"?

It's hardly like we as a fan base have been quiet about this being a f**king disgrace of a consolation prize. Where is our solidarity with the teams lower down the pyramid also f**ked over by the no replays rule?

I will not change my mind on this competition even if we somehow win the thing without injuring a player. I will also be the first in line to berate anyone involved with this decision when we lose a player to an ACL/MCL injury that we did not need to pick up. We won't even make the gap in recovering and paying a player to be out for 12 months with the pittance of prize money on offer. ?1m is f**k all when you dilute it beyond the headline in to round prize money. Headline numbers like that are there to fool the stupid.

If anyone thinks there is value in this competition I've got some terrific chocolate fireguards for sale. I'd genuinely appreciate an honest explanation of why the Board think that we should waste our time, effort, and player safety on this non-event of a competition. Without the f**king nonsense we've put out stroking the gooch of the Premier League to completion.

I've never been more annoyed by the actions of the club before. I held this board in much higher esteem than they have shown to hold the club with this. It's probably a good job I'm nowhere near Moss Lane this weekend, I think my comments will be heavily echoed by others though.

Between this, the shirt launches, and the absolute dogsh*te social media presence we currently have I'm wondering what the f**k the club thinks it's improving on at the moment. It's not the product on the pitch (we've regressed) the matchday offering (we still dump on fans in order to get a few 100 more oldham fans in) it's certainly not borrowing our neighbouring rugby teams homework when we realised shirt designs were due to Mr Puma after registration. It's absolutely not announcing for the 7,567th time the shop opening hours on twitter, or telling us some more about the club's community activities, all while we don't know if our highest earning player will be back after a total of 10 or 12 months on the sideline.

And yeah, I think in situations like this the fans really should say it how they feel.

Agree with just about everything with what's been said above. The Club have obviously got a lot right on and off the pitch over the last few years but the clubs way of doing things is at times questionable. Remember when the capacity of the ground was reduced by Trafford Council a few years back and how hard it was at times, to get regular feedback as to how things were progressing. Remember the 3rd kit that was launched last year to much fanfare and somewhat predictably has, as far as I'm aware, been worn a total of zero times in a competitive match.
The Club were planning to charge for anyone to attend the Player of the Year awards at the end of last season, 20 pounds if my memory is correct, before quickly relenting and making it the usual free event.
You never know when the club shop is going to be open as the opening/closing times keep changing. Not surprising when it is open, there's rarely anyone in it. Were there not also going to be additional events there,to utilise the premises fully? I'm sure it's on a reduced rent from the Stamford Quarter, but surely the club could make more use of it.
Finally the National League Cup, I think it would be useful for Bill to give a full statement as to why we are taking part, when we clearly had a choice not to.

I agree with practically all of the foregoing, and have no interest at all at attending any of the games.

Just to add, the only thing the four top 16 clubs not taking part had to do to get out of it was to simply say they were opting out. There is no obligation here. Effectively three quarters of the eligible clubs have decided its worth it and four other clubs have been willing to replace those that opted out. We'll see how it goes but on paper it seems most clubs have decided the sums add up.

I can't stop getting angry at the announcement we put out. "The competition will give Alty our first-ever competitive fixture against our near-neighbours from the north of the borough, as well as renewing acquaintances with Blackburn Rovers after more than 50 years." It is neither of those things. We are playing reserve teams.

Did f**king Middlewich town declare they did the double over Altrincham FC of the National League when they did our reserves in the other week for the second time this season?

The pricing on this may be it's death knell. If it's closer to league prices than CSC it'll be like playing behind closed doors IMHO.

I think that as fans, the best thing we can do is ignore the existence of this 'competition' and treat it with the contempt it deserves; not even acknowledging the fixtures.
