The Great Left Back Debate
« on: August 02, 2007, 06:13:35 PM »

Here's whats apparently available in our region at the moment, going on name, current club, age the status

Colin Woodthorpe - Bury - 38 - available on a free transfer

Jimmy Mcnulty - Macc Town - 22 - available on a free transfer

Phillip Cave - Newcastle - 20 - available on a free transfer

Rob Ullathorne - unattached - 36 - Available

Ryan Serrant - Leeds - 19 - available on a free transfer

Simon Charlton - Oldham - 36 - Available on a free transfer

Paul Casey - Burnley - 19 - available on free transfer

This is according to the PFA list, so not many about really, especially taking our financial constraints into account

Could we get any of these? If we could would it be a 38 year old who's past it?

Looks like we could have another season of Peyton at left back.

The bottom line is if there is a left back available who is better than what we have already and is also prepared to play part time for low wages, I have every confidence GH will offer him a place in the squad.

So, to summarise one more time the player in question must be:

1) Available (which the above players apparently are)
2) Affordable (I cannot speak for the above)
3) Better than what we have already (Again I know nothing about the players above)

I think it's reasonable to assume GH knows of the players which are available and where possible either has them watched or invited down for a trial.  It's harsh that we're struggling to fill that position but we could do a lot worse than having Warren at left back.

I suspect that what frustrates some of us is that we are now almost twelve months on from the release of Chris Adams and the sudden departure of Adam Yates and yet we still haven't filled this position and seem no nearer to doing so.

And don't get me started on Andy Scott......

Would now be a bad time to mention that Droylsden have signed left back Liam Murray?

I believe that Liam Serrant has joined his older brother Carl at Farsley.

Maybe in fairness to GH it's worth pointing out that he has been after left backs, off the top of my head I know he's tried for Danny Adams, Andrew Smart, Matty McGinn, Matt Doughty, Ashley Tonkin, Greg Strong, Adam Yates...and much more I expect.

Maybe Danny Adams is the best example of the problem, local lad, knows many of us personally outside football, likes Alty, loves GH, played for us before, at a loose end money wise as he's been paid of by Huddersfiled, irons iin the fire, just wants to keep fit before his move back into the league in the summer, a very good by our standards financial offer made to him.

What happens? Morecambe offer full time contract, all of a sudden he's got a great opportunity to get back in the football league, gets to play football every day for a living again, more than doubles his money, wins promotion, ends up on tv fulfilling everyones dream playing in front of 60,000 at the New Wembley instead of slogging it out with us at Tamworth.

I mean really, how do you compete with that?  ???

Can't we get a right footed one who can run backwards?

May need to look at left backs in BS North or Unibond who want to move up a league or 2.

Oh dear, oh dear!

I just hope that he's still at Hyde when we draw them in the FA Cup!
