Promotion to Football League
« on: January 14, 2023, 07:36:26 PM »

There's a small piece in today's Times suggesting next month EFL clubs will be discussing the possibility of changing the rules so three National clubs get promoted at the end of each season.

We shall have to wait and see if anything comes of it. Obviously the bottom half of Div 2 will be against it.

Should be 3 up and 3 down in every league from National League North/South upwards to the Premiership for consistency. Job done!

Absolutely against it - should be four promoted from the National League like happens in the division above (and to match the four down)!

To be fair, it sounds like in 1986 an 2002 they somewhat had the FL clubs over a barrel, so unless there's something I don't know about, I don't expect it.

By the way, anyone know what finally convinced the Scottish League to allow teams to be promoted to it? I suspect something to do with the formation of the Lowland League or the formation of New Co. Rangers.

This story seems to be based on EFL clubs in the top division voting it through for more resources.

Won't be anything we need to worry about for a few years yet unfortunately.

It would clear the decks faster of the big money clubs who end up scrapping for just two places

Previously i thought the prospect of getting an extra promotion place any time soon was a no go . Now though maybe the voting clubs might just look at most of the top six in our league and their size and history and consider just who they believe would strengthen the FL more , Notts County or Hartlepool , Chesterfield or Harrogate , Wrexham or Crawley , just for examples .

Simple solution: make the National League the 5th division!

It's the obvious thing to do now all the teams are full time. (Are they?) It's probably a stretch too far though.

What difference would it make?

League cup instead of FATrophy (I’d rather have a realistic shot at winning at Wembley than losing to someone’s reserves)

More promotion slots (a good thing)

Greater share of EFL money

Less tv coverage if we swap BT sport for the limited big league 2 get?

Calling in league three won’t change the gates that much!

I've always thought that splitting league 2 and the Conference into league 2 North and South would be the best idea.

It'll never happen though.
