York City Match thread
« on: November 10, 2022, 10:12:32 AM »

Huge game after 2 losses. will Parky go with the same starting 11 or will we see some tweaking. Personally, would like to see Newby starting, Dinanga up top, he is out top scorer, and we need goals. Osborne should start. Jennings or Hulme to come on as necessary with Marriott. Toby, should be getting close to a return.

Let’s just have a proper go at a team for once….

                    Byrne

    Mullarky.     Jones.      Baines

           Ludstrum.   Marriot

  Newby.           CCC.        Colclough

             Jennings.    Dinanga

Starting Osbourne over Marriott is a sign of insanity

I think Marriott should start too!

With the return of Marriott, two proper wingers and two hard-working forwards that probably aren't good enough to do it on their own...

...there's probably a decent case for 442 at the moment with the personnel we have.

As suggested by Dec on the soon-to-be-released KGR podcast, I'd bring Osborne back in and pack the midfield with the three of him, Lundstram and Marriott. Let Lundstram and Marriott do the work that was being asked of Osborne, and afford him the licence to go further forward as he's more accustomed to doing: "he's coming off the back of a couple of hugely successful seasons and will bring goals, a creativity and dynamism that we are all excited to watch" https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/53247327

I'm sorry to disagree, but on his recent performances he'd be lucky to reach my bench. I don't have any stats, but I'd be amazed if his pass completion was 60% or better.

Packing the midfield with Osbourne is a reason not to pack the midfield!

Player fails in a set system, gets written off completely. It's the Alty way. Almost as Alty as getting giddy over a trialist with yellow boots.

Yup.

Osborne isn’t a bad player. Bit of recency bias at play I think.

Deservedly dropped in recent weeks after poor performances but until then was a weekly
6-7/10 every game. Lundstram and Marriott must start for me, but I’d be tempted to put a third central midfielder in on Saturday.

He's not a bad player, but drops a horrendous goal conceding bollock on a regular basis.

He's 3rd choice in the '2' in the guaranteed 4-2-3-1

100% agreed - reminds me of our last relegation season where I'm convinced that, despite his individual shortcomings, having O'Keefe in there alongside Moult and Richman in a much more solid 451 - rather than trying to accommodate James Lawrie in a 4411 - would have probably seen us safe.

Remarkable current similarities - Osborne is O'Keefe, CCC is Lawrie - no offence to CCC, but I do see the benefit in having another more orthodox midfielder in there.

Loose passes can be forgiven more easily at 10 - compared to, say for example, giving Paul Mullin the ball in our own half (Osborne actually did this last season of course).

The team setup is greater than the sum of its parts.
