Query re. former Alty goalkeeper Andy Newell
« on: July 20, 2007, 05:04:45 PM »

Andy Newell was a keeper who played six games for Alty towards the end of the 1992/93 season, when Gerry Quinn was the manager.

Can anyone recall/confirm that he was the brother of former Blackburn Rovers forward and Luton Town manager, Mike Newell?

Or am I totally mistaken?!

My research had already unearthed that information......but the question remains: was he Mike Newell's brother?

What keepers did we have that season? Off the top of my head and without going to consult with old programmes I think we had

Jeff Wealands
Steve Roberts
Steve Berryman
Mark Davies
Andy Newell

And some others..

I do not know for definite but I have no recollection of Andy Newell being Mike Newell's brother.Did he play for Gerry Quinn or Stan Allan/John Davison as Ballers list of keepers is from 1991-1992 season?

Ballers,

Most of those that you mentioned played for us between 1990 and 1992....before Gerry Quinn became the manager.

During the 1992/93 season, we used six different goalkeepers:

Joe Paladino;
Mike Pollitt (on loan from Bury);
Wayne Baker (bald character from Farsley);
Ray Dennis;
Andy Newell;
Andy Gorton.

Ah I thought Newell was a Stan Allan / John Davison season man. Was Wayne Baker there in the 92-93 season? I seem to remember him certainly being there the season after and buggering off shortly before we played Accrington in the FA Cup and poor Lee Spencer had to step in at the eleventh hour.

I seem to remember Wayne Baker (AKA Uncle Fester) as having amazing powers of recovery.

If I recall correctly he reported that he couldn't play in the FA Cup as he had a broken hand yet lo and behold he was miraculously restored to full working order (admittedly that wasn't really all that clever) in time for the following League fixture
