Kick in vs Throw in
« on: June 13, 2022, 07:44:57 PM »

I see a suggestion has been out forward to trial kick ins, instead of a throw.

I am 100% that 20/25 years ago the northern premier league trialled this in a league cup competition.

Can anybody confirm that please? There's no better place to go for this kind of info.

Thanks everyone.

My kids were all either in their teens or early twenties round about then so I had my hands full dealing with all their cr*p and working all the hours to have any idea.
Tangential awareness seems to think you're correct though.

I can remember a league doing that, but I am not sure which one it was; the Isthmian League comes to mind, but memory and a Google search both fail me.

I'm pretty sure it was the Isthmian league, with the result being described as transforming the league into "land of the giants", presumably because of all those extra balls into the box. I would not want to repeat the experiment though I would be open to a return to the team that puts the ball out putting it back in, then we could kick for touch like in rugby!

Let's have a return to the four steps rule while we're at it, and six seconds for the keeper to kick the ball out, strictly enforced by video game refs...

It was the Isthmian league sometime in the mid 90s, I saw a couple of games. It was a farce, teams played for the line and on getting a kick in, they had to tell the referee of the intention. The game then stopped while everyone piled into the box. Terrible idea.

Google has started to work for me and it was indeed the Isthmian League in 1994-95 as well as certain overseas leagues.  Here's Horsham's take on it; it doesn't seem to have been a good idea, as mentioned above.

I thought so.

Have there been any good experiments, or any you would like to see? And is this extra subs business (more than three) going to remain permanent for some competitions (and the no FA Cup replays after a certain round)?

I’d like to see the punishment for a blatant dive being the advantage you were trying to gain. So drop down like you’ve been shot clutching your face because someone’s finger touched you - straight red and three game ban. Dive in the box - penalty up the other end.

Agree something needs to change on the keepers. There is a rule that no one ever enforces. Maybe up it to 10 seconds but actually enforce it. And the time starts when you catch the ball and fall on it, not when you get up.

Shepherding the ball out of play is obstruction, the obvious intent is not to play the ball. Actually enforcing that one might encourage more long balls so I’m undecided on that one. Watching England piss about with it without appearing to be trying to score makes me more inclined to try it and see if it livens up too flight games. Might be detrimental at our level though if it triggers long throw merchants to take advantage of more attacking throw ins from defenders clearing it

I never saw a game in which kick ins were allowed, however a few years
earlier I'm sure the Conference was the league used to trial no off side
from direct free kicks. The fact that both only lasted one season speaks
volumes for their success? Certainly hope there are no plans to try them
again.

I'd like to see the return of the golden goal instead of 30 extra minutes.

The no off side at free kicks was trialed in the 1987/88 season and as with
the kick in was an open invitation to lump the ball into a very congested
goalmouth. Doubt neither of these would suit our style of football.

The idea is to speed the game up. You can only kick it in if you do it within 5 seconds is the suggestion

Wasn't that experiment abandoned because it led to negative outcomes - teams were reluctant to be caught out on the break and risk conceding, so the golden goal period became a bit of a defensive bore-fest?
