Abandoned Alty Games?
« on: June 16, 2021, 11:07:39 PM »

After coming across the attached piece of footage on YouTube about an Alty abandoned FA Cup match in 1963 i was wondering if anyone could think of a more high profile Alty game being abandoned than this FA Cup tie that apparently was being filmed for highlights on TV? Or even recall other abandoned games?

This match appears to be from Nov 1963 when Alty played Wrexham (then bottom of Div3) in the FA Cup 1st Round... The 1st game at Alty was abandoned due to fog (as seen, or barely seen, on attached footage) on Sat Nov 16th... the game was then restaged at Alty on Wed afternoon of Nov 20th (think no floodlights back then) & ended 0-0... Wrexham then won the replay 3-0...

The second link below shows a Wrexham link to this game & shows both teams line ups...

Alty's line up was apparently...
1. Mitch Downie
2. Ian Greaves
3. Gerry Harrison
4. Brian Jarvis
5. John Higgins
6. Bobby English
7. Roy Isherwood
8. Freddie Taberner
9. Ken Finney
10. D. Cooke
11. Paddy Mulvey

Apparently John Higgins from the above Alty line up played for Bolton between 1950-61 and during that time played in Bolton's FA Cup win over Man United in 1958... he then moved onto then Cheshire Lge side Wigan from 1961-63, before joining Alty (also Cheshire Lge) for the 1963-65 seasons...

I remember a game at Runcorn in the mid-80's that was abandoned due to thick fog. I'm surprised the game lasted as long as it did, from behind the goal you couldn't see much past the 18-yard box. I'm fairly sure it was a Saturday game, probably in the GMVC. I can't remember the score at the time of abandonment, nor the result of the replay. No doubt someone such as Cult will be able to provide more details.

Yes, I recollect attending that one. It was a GMVC fixture at Canal Street played on Saturday, 5th November 1988.

The match was eventually abandoned in the 77th minute with the score standing at 0-0.

When we all reconvened amidst those idyllic surroundings on 7th March 1989, Alty proceeded to lose 3-0.

And there was no cover on the Golf Road end as I remember standing on my bike’s crossbar trying to peer over the concrete wall at that end. I’d cycled down Acacia Avenue from Alty Grammar to try and catch the end of the match.

Wasn’t that veteran broadcaster Cliff Mitchelmore perched very precariously on top of the original main stand trying to broadcast the fog-hit tie?

Re the Alty v Wrexham game. I was the Alty mascot during that time,. Clive Colbridge who was playing left wing for Wrexham that day, later joined Alty. ..

That day was a real pea souper.

Now you've mentioned it... recall those Runcorn & Stafford games now...

Re Wrexham... it must have been a really thick fog... not what you want if you are being covered by TV as potential Cup shock (as Wrexham were bottom Div3 at time)...

Another cup tie abandoned due to fog:

Naturally, we went on to lose 2-1 in the replayed fixture.

Wrexham's line-up also included full-back Peter Jones and midfielder Mick Metcalf, both of whom went on to play for Alty in the 1968/69 and 1969/70 seasons.

Peter Jones. Memories!
Probably the oldest looking Alty player I have seen (or was it because I was so young?)
Good player, not much pace but read the game well.

And saved is the correct word. We were appalling in that game, and we barely deserved to win the replayed fixture either.

Good player, not much pace but read the game well.

One of my favourite Alty players. In those days, pace was less important than it is now (see also Jackie Swindells !) but there was no substitute for class, and Peter had that in abundance.
