SOUTHPORT operations director Liam Watson has revealed the club have had a bid accepted for a League One player and says the Port will be a ‘proper full-time club’ next season.

The former Southport boss, who returned to the club as a director in September, was talking after the Sandgrounders’ 3-2 home victory over Wrexham.

Port have now moved up to 19th under boss Steve Burr and are three points clear of the relegation zone.

Burr has recently brought in Northern Ireland international Rory McKeown and signed young striker Delial Brewster on loan from Everton.

And it looks like there’s more to come, with Watson revealing they have bid accepted for a League One player with the potential deal being the biggest he has seen at Southport.

“You’ve got to give the chairman and the rest of the directors a bit of credit because there’s been money found,” Watson told the club’s website.

“We have used money from the sale of (Connor) McCarthy and the sale of (Louis) Almond to subsidise the moving around of the squad.

“Two made their debuts today. Delail, who we’ve been chasing for the last two or three months, waiting patiently for him to come in. And then Rory, he’s 23 years of age, lives in Crosby, full international, he ticks all the boxes of what we’re looking for.

“We’ve had an offer accepted from a League One club. It’s the biggest offer I’ve ever made at Southport Football Club which is really pleasing.

“Hopefully we’ll carry on with that, we are looking at improving that back part of the squad, so there will be a little bit of movement in and out. We have to get where we need to be.”

Watson also spoke about the Sandgrounders’ plans to move completely full-time next season as they look to compete with the rest of the National League.

“We want to be a full-time club next season and I mean a proper full-time club, not half-hearted,” he said.

“We want to do things right. Where we want to go is going to cost us extra revenue so the added sponsorships have been very welcome.”

You have to wonder how long with their support they can sustain a full time club. It doesn't seem to be the greatest business decision when the large part of their decision seems to be based on a  fee paid by a league one club. Things like that happen very rarely for a non league team. Would be interesting to know if they go full time, if they go down to the NLN.
