« on: September 15, 2016, 08:24:32 PM »

No trains

"Engineering work is taking place between Birmingham New Street and Cheltenham Spa, closing the line between Longbridge and Bromsgrove.

Trains between Bromsgrove and Cheltenham Spa will be diverted via Kidderminster, extending journey times by up to 60 minutes. Trains will not call at University, Bromsgrove and Ashchurch for Tewkesbury.
Road transport will operate between Longbridge, Bromsgrove and Ashchurch for Tewkesbury. Passengers for University may use London Midland services."

This is the way I'm doing it -
Outward
Picc 1007 arr Birmingham New Street 1133
BNS 1214 (or 1314 for those planning to drink in Brum!)
Longbridge 1235 (or 1335)
Bus from Longbridge 1245 (or 1345)
arrives Bromsgrove 1310 (or 1410)
Walk from station to ground is 1.4 miles according to Google
Return
Bus from Bromsgrove 1710 (might be possible if you move like the clappers!) or 1810 (much more likely for the likes of me!)
arrives Longbridge 1735 (or 1835)
Train from Longbridge 1742 (or 1842)
BNS 1803 (or 1903)
BNS 1931 arr Picc 2059

I see that Roytonmike's schedule is close to 2 hours between New Street and Bromsgrove town centre - it is a good 25 minutes walk from the station (which is on the outskirts of town) to the Victoria Ground (which is smack bang in the middle).

My advice would be to get the train to New Street, and then walk about 100metres out of the station to Smallbrook Queensway and find bus stop SN5 (maybe SN8) and jump on the 144 bus. That bus is very regular, and runs every 15-20 minutes from central Birmingham through to Worcester. After approx. an hour, the 144 stops at Bromsgrove bus station. The bus station is in the middle of town and about 5 minutes walk from the Victoria Ground.

If you get to New Street for 11.33, there is a 144 departure at 11.47, getting into Bromsgrove town centre at 12.41

Hope that helps ...

Thanks for your tips Andy. As you'll see, I've edited my earlier post to try & make it a bit clearer.
Last time I was in Bromsgrove there was a good pub just up the Birmingham Road from the ground, on the other side of the road - mind you, that was last century! I think it might have been called the Hop Pole - the bitter was very moreish. Is it still going to your knowledge?

Yeah, I can see you were building in some slack for Birmingham drinking. The 144 gets you into Bromsgrove town centre nearly an hour quicker than your direct route, though, and its a stiff walk from the station.

TBH, I dont know pubs in Bromsgrove, but there are a number in the town centre, including between the bus station and the ground. The ground bar is also decent ... cant think the game will be segregated.

After the game, you should make the 17.10 from the bus station, but there is the 144 direct to New Street station going at the same time - and every 20 minutes if you want to be more leisurely.

Just checked and this weekend is not one that is scheduled for FA Cup Rounds (if either of us progress) - so is unlikely to be rearranged (I know, I know, ... reaching the 1st Round may seem fanciful ...)

Many thanks - looks like my one brain cell is still working nearly 24 years on - it was December 92, we got tonked 4-1 by Bromsgrove, & I have a sneaking feeling Darren Royle was in the side & the immortal Tunna might have made his debut that day (Cult please confirm!).

Darren Royle and Ian Tunnacliffe played for Alty at different times. Darren Royle was here around 1995/96, I think.

Spot on, Mike.

The mighty Tunna's debut was clearly unforgettable and evidently remains an enduring image of wonder for you.

Alty's line-up on that afternoon was as follows:

1. Joe Paladino
2. Simon Woodhead
3. Clive Freeman
4. Paul France
5. Ray Sidderley
6. Mark Ogley
7. Steve Saunders
8. Ricky Harris
9. Ian Tunnacliffe
10. Mick Carmody
11. John Smith.

Subs:

12. Mick Hayde
14. Charlie Bradshaw (for Saunders at half-time).
