Thanks for the support chaps, we made the distance in just short of 4 hours (3:45) and averaged around 16.4mph which I was ecstatic with if I'm honest!  It did appear to be entirely uphill though, perhaps it is a Penrose staircase?

The headwinds coming into Lytham were indeed relentless!  Average speed dropped considerably during the last 10 miles
