Some players, like some supporters, can't get themselves up for friendlies, and that's perfectly understandable.

That's actually a fair point but one I'd only apply to players already "bedded in". Anyone looking to impress it is the only chance. Having said that if I was a gaffer I'd be none too chuffed with a player not playing to his ability, avoiding silly injuries notwithstanding.
