Question for the Alty historians
« on: August 01, 2012, 10:18:29 PM »

Does anyone remember Doug Newton and did he play in the Trophy final ?.................without going into detail, his son was talking to my mother this week and when she mentioned I live in Altrincham, he casually said, "me dad played for them"

He scored a penalty in both legs of the semi-final......but was the one substitute in the final......I  can't remember whether he got on for the last few minutes or not?

A talented midfielder who did very well for Burton Albion & made the England Non-League side, I think, but didn't quite cut it at Alty.

I don't recollect him coming on as a substitute at Wembley in 1986.....but will need to verify that by delving into the archives.

During the 1985/86 Gola League season, he made a total of 26 (+4 as sub) appearances for Alty and scored 10 goals (including 5 penalties).

Not sure why he never really established himself at Moss Lane, as I remember him as being quite a creative midfielder.

After leaving the Robins, I think that he joined the exotically-named Shepshed Charterhouse.....?

Unused sub at Wembley as far as I remember - I had the suspicion that his face didn't fit for some reason, as he was a more than competent player and perhaps under-used during his time at Moss Lane.

He had significant confidence issues from what I recall....sometimes even getting him on the FoP was an achievement

I remember a photo of the Alty bench at the final whistle of the 86 Trophy final in which everyone is leaping to their feet with joy, apart from Doug Newton who is sitting, arms folded, distinctly unhappy not to have been involved.

He had a decent game in the Trophy semi 2nd leg but as I recall didn't really do much else. Definitely didn't get on as sub at Wembley - and his face showed it.

Had a bad mullett from what I recall.

Have we ever had a "worst Alty player's hairstyle" thread? :D
