for me colchester united away 1990/1991

A load of colchester army type lads fans decided to enter our end and started to wade into the Alty fans....I certainly needed to change my pants after that.

Also Halifax at home when some of their fans dressed up, everything seemed so calm in the Golf Road end, then bang  :(

Port Vale in the FA Cup 1992 - absolute mayhem in the Golf Road End.

Aldershot Town in the FA Trophy 1999 - advised by stewards not to hang around at the final whistle. Didn't even wait to clap the team off, just legged it through that weird little park back to the coach.

Apart from Colchester, which was a sudden event and over very quickly, I remember being terrified for the whole game at Frickley in an FA Cup tie in the mid 80s.
I think it was around the time of the miners strike and the ground was full of very angry yorkshiremen who clearly weren't scared of the police and were itching for a fight. I think Phil Gardner scored for us right at the end of the game after we had been totally outplayed for the first 90 minutes, but without conceding.
That only made matters worse, on the way out I just buried my head in my coat and jumped on a bus that happened to be passing, without caring where it went. Fortunately it went to Barnsley and I was able to get a train home!!

Ellesmere port away in the FA Cup.when they ambushed us in the car park after we had beaten them.they had tried a pitch invasion to get the game called off first.

the game against Port Vale stands out as an absolute fiasco.  They were indeed Staffs. dibble and they were utterly clueless.  As seemed to be the case at that time they were determined to stick to their plan (if they had one) and took no notice of what was going on around them.  Did we have to pay for that?  should have claimed a naffing refund!

The Frickley game was tense but I don't remember feeling threatened, some of the locals were up for a scrap but they weren't too bothered if it was us, the police or whatever.

Aldershot was grim, as was Wycombe away at their old ground - pre match scuffles!

London Alty sloped off into the bar under the stand and spread some non-league friendship.

I'd rather go there than Dover

though I was asked what my scarf was in a Leeds pub (we'd been to see Frank Sidebottom).  Red and white scarves aren't too welcome in Leeds!

The only 2 times I've felt trouble and a bit concerned were :

Bishop Auckland at home in the trophy, circa 1996 ?  and the George Shepherd disco
Wrexham at home NYD last year, group of dickheads in home end and a steward punched

The legendary 1-0 win (God bless Mal Bailey!) at Runcorn in the FA Challenge Trophy Semi-Final Second Leg back in April 1978.

Adopted downcast faces as we traipsed back to the car after the game amidst irate Runcorn slubberdegullions.

Once we had driven far enough out to clear the Runcorn boundary, there was an eruption of jubilant "Wem-ba-lee!" chants.

Cult - I agree about Runcorn.  And what is it with Trophy Semi-Finals?

I offer Wycombe away in 1982 and Boston away in 1985 both as very scary days.

For Wycombe I was stood in the away end watching streams of skinheads climbing into the Alty segregation along the touchline.  Difficult not to cheer - once, twice, three times - but I managed it

And at Boston, as I mentioned the other day, golf balls nails and the like hurled at us by 4000 inbred racist neanderthals

I remember that very high fence at the away end which I stupidly thought was to keep us off the pitch. It was to keep the mongs with one eye in the middle of their foreheads from getting to us! :o

1.  Spurs the first time.  Stood in front of a gorilla drinking straight from the vodka bottle for half the game (no, it wasn't George Heslop), then waited for ages for a promised but non-appearing police escort before striking out alone, scarf tucked under coat, muttering in a fake cockney accent and trying to look disgusted.  Fun train journey home though!

2.  Mossley circa 1980.  Coach got bricked and it wasn't half a cold journey back.

3. Runcorn April 78 - got a right kicking but somehow it didn't matter  ;D
