This is really sad news.

I used to help Jack as an 11 year old with the pitch and odd jobs in the holidays.  His knowledge of the pitch, how and where it did or didn't drain was second to none.

He'd be at the ground at all hours and took massive pride in the surface, and this was in the days before we had any money spent on the pitch.

RIP Jack, part of the fabric of Altrincham Football Club and my thoughts are with David at this sad time.

Sincerely condolences to Dave his family and friends. From a very personal perspective the Thorpes are principally responsible for getting me hooked into Alty as a newcomer to the area from a 'lively' Belfast  in 1970. As a fellow ballboy I too was an 'inhabitant' of Jack's hut along with both the Flynn boys and will always remember his knowledge of all things Alty - this really is the end of an era. RIP Jack.

Fantastic servant to the club, and a truely nice person. Remember painting the ground with him years ago was twice my age but still managed twice my energy. Best wishes to his family in this difficult time.

I heard on New Year's Eve that his condition had seriously deteriorated and it shows his character and strength that he didn't let go of life without a struggle.

So very sorry for David.  My thoughts are with you and Julie at this very sad time.

RIP Jack

Such sad news, we really have lost an Alty stalwart today. Like others I used to be a ballboy and remember jack as a groundsman for what seemed like, and probably was, decades and seeing him in the tatton as well.

I know it gave me and others pleasure to see Jack still attending games at 97 and 98 years of age and my condolences go to David and the rest of the Thorpe family, a true Alty family if ever there was one.

RIP Jack.

Sad news, indeed.

A genuine legend at Moss Lane.

I really believed that he was indestructible - after all, he had even survived years of drinking Sid the landlord's infamous 'Dark Mild' in The Moss!

Sincere condolences to Dave.

Barry.

And here's the great man himself in familiar action at Moss Lane back in December 1973:

Very Sad News indeed

We can speculate about what defines an Altrincham FC Legend as long as we want but I would say that we have just lost a GENUINE Legend of the Club

Deepest Commiserations to the family and friends
