Workington - an Altycentric history
« on: August 16, 2011, 02:44:58 PM »

When Workington got thrown out of the league they got off to a dreadful start in the Northern Premier League, heavily losing their first 6 matches.

On 14th September 1977, Alty rolled into town and got turned over 2-1, an Ian Morris equaliser being cancelled out by an 83rd minute winner by Martin Leng.

When they came to Moss Lane over Christmas, we beat them 5-1.  Walter Gilliat fired Workington ahead on 39 mins, before a 15 minute Heathcote hat trick at the start of the second half turned the game on its head, in front of 1002.

Two weeks later we returned to Cumbria for the Trophy 1st round and were lucky to escape with a 0-0: a Heathcote-esque free kick in the 90th minute cleared the wall and shaved the top of the cross bar.  We were that close to going out of the competition - but instead went on to win it and start the march towards best non league club in the country

Matches against Workington at Moss Lane

NPL Dec 77 5-1 Heathcote 3, Johnson, King Att:1002
FAT Jan 78 4-0 Rogers2, Heathcote, Bailey Att: 1100
NPL Apr 79 3-2 Rogers, Heathcote, Johnson Att: 1184

So if we continue the trend, there will be a lot of goals and those who score them will go on to be Alty legends, playing for years in a highly succesful Alty side
