A whole new defence
« on: June 08, 2011, 01:36:31 PM »

It might need a bit of tinkering, and not wanting to upset anyone, but it will be for the greater good.Anyone who has watched us in recent times knows that we couldnt play with four at the back due to numerous circumstances.Hopefully that will now change

I don't understand by people worrying about losing Joseph, Williams and Smith. We can bring in better player for less money, and to be fair non of them 3 deserved there contracts renewed after last season.

We won't  get a better player than Smith.

We will get  a lesser player for less money with a better attitude.

Why wont we? He isnt exactly Rio Ferdinand is he? Its not like he is leaving us for a top flight club.

We have a decent history of bringing young or talented players in who move on to better things. Sinnott knows what he is doing, why cant we bring in a better player?

He's just making the point that in terms of ability, Smith could hold his own in the FL. We'd do well to attract someone with similar levels of talent at BSBN level.

Agreed about Joseph and Williams, but Smith has been one of out most solid and consistent performers for the past 2 seasons.

So 87 goals against last season had nothing at all in the slightest to do with Smith?

Let's get it right, James Smith is without question the best centre back we've had for quite a while and could easily play in league 2. He is quick and strong and reads the game very well and has for me been the outstanding performer in the last season and a half. Having said that he wasnt the same player after his head was turned by Stockport and I feel that him leaving now is the best for both parties.

Alot has been said about the defence shipping all those goals last year. I think it's wrong to just blame the defence. We were second best all over the park.

All these points are valid, however I would venture to suggest that a player with what may have been percieved as 'attitude' and 'temperament' problems such as those James showed from time to time would either have to revise their attitude or be fired off. In these current financially straitened times no club can afford to carry a player who may be viewed as a disciplinary liability

James Smith's aspirations and those of the club do not match and in this situation it's best for all concerned to shake hands and go their separate ways.

If this club is to succeed in achieving its aim of promotion next season all the players must be united behind that common cause. We simply cannot afford to have any passengers onboard.

Thanks to James Smith, you've been a good Alty player during your time here, if a little hot-headed at times. Good luck in your future career, meanwhile let's get on with steering the Alty "ship" back in an upwards direction.
