Shame, but the town is rugby through and through. I do remember losing 2-3 and both Ellender and Adams missed pens, oh and was it Dave the blob Felgate in goal for Leigh ?

Horwich Railway Mechanics Institute lost a lot of their fan base when they relocated into the Rugby League stronghold that is Leigh.
I worked in Leigh for two years and was surprised to learn that not only did they have a pro-RL side, but also two semi-pro sides in Leigh Miners and Leigh East. You used to see 'Leyther' (term for folk from Leigh) kids walking round the streets with the oval ball.

The slide out of the Conference and through the leagues was quick and there was a lot of hype when the new stadium (council owned) was built and the club changed it's name once again to Genesis. The chairman talked up a big future, but the crowds never materialised with both Wigan and Bolton offering cheap football just down the road. Add increasing rents to pay for the ground and it all spelt disaster.

Big shame really. Not a club that deserved this.

But don't the people of Leigh absolutely loathe Wigan?

They do - which made it a cruel blow in 1976 when the Local Government reorganisation made Leigh part of Wigan Metropolitan Borough Council.

You are correct Harpenden............Leigh is a town in Bolton, that is now administered by and become part of Wigan.

I suspect over time football rivalary will diminish as people forget the above.......all the towns footy folk seem to wear Utd or City shirts anyway. I was just making the point that rather than watching Leigh play Atherton LR, they could watch Premiership football for a few quid more and the bus fare
