Twitter Match Updates
« on: January 24, 2011, 04:30:20 PM »

We are very fortunate to have a reasonable number of our games covered on local radio. However, when we are playing certain sides there is no radio commentary at all e.g. tomorrow.

John Laidler does a great job of providing updates from the ground, but he can only provide so many updates if he doesn't want to be typing all match.

Many people these days have smart phones which means they can easily provide updates throughout the match. This could be done by posting on the forum match thread but this can often be a bit fiddly and depend upon how good your browser is.

Instead using a twitter app would be a very good way for people at the game to let others know what is going on - I find the AP updates pretty uninformative.

Obviously I don't want people to be furiously tweeting all the way through the match, but a message every 25 minutes or so form a few people there would be very useful to people who can't be at the match.

Just end all tweets with the #Alty and people with access to twitter will be able to see the opinions and updates from people at the match.

Any takers?

I have done that a couple of times already on Twitter, as you say, using the hash tag #alty or #altrincham

That's good to know.

I realise some people will assume that twitter = people who are up their own arses, which to a certain extent is true.

However, it can be a really good tool for communicating. It's just like texting your mate an quick match update but letting other people see it as well.

Not a fan of twitter Tbf but I think it's a good idea, forums a bit fiddle to type on a 3 inch screen

We already have this one, although it's not updated regularly

The exact interface will be different depending on the Twitter software you have on your phone.

Let's assume you want to update twitter from your computer:

Go to http://twitter.com/

Make an account, choose a username and password.

Once you have done so you will see a page that has a box at the top with 'What's Happening?' written above it.

You write your tweet in this box, much like you would make a facebook status update.

Your tweet is then sent out to a huge list that anyone can see.

So say if your tweet was "Denham scores! #Alty" Anyone who had searched for Alty would get a list of tweets that mentioned Alty, if you didn't put the #Alty it would be difficult for someone to find.

Well, I thought this worked really well last night.

I wasn't near a computer so could only get updates on my phone.

Thanks to all who tweeted, hopefully this will be a regular thing!

You can tweet (that's the verb) by text, so your phone will work fine.

1) Login to your Twitter account and go to Settings.
2) Under Devices, add your phone number.
3) Then you are required to verify your phone number. Send the captcha code to 86444 if on Vodafone, Orange, 3 or O2 (+44 7624 801423 for other networks)
4) Save that same number in your phone and use it to text your tweets (that's the noun) to the world.

You can also bypass the computer altogether and sign up via text by texting START to the same number above.

No problem :) I'll be able to most, if not all home games, but not away ones I'm afraid.
