Today's Altrincham FC Trivia Question
« on: December 18, 2010, 05:57:44 PM »

Something to ponder over whilst we are all snowbound....

Identify EIGHT of the current managers of Blue Square Bet Premier clubs who have either:

(i) played for a team against Alty in an FA Cup tie

or

(ii) been named as a substitute for a team playing Alty in an FA Cup tie.

Please also name the respective clubs that they were representing.

** Incidentally, one of these eight individuals has played against Alty for two different clubs.

I seem to remember Mr Flynn giving me this question on the way back from Hayes, so I know the answers.

I will say though that one of them is quite obvious,but people won't think of him.

Tell that Brian Flynn to think up his own questions in future instead of pinching my material!

Ken McKenna?

Correct.

He played for Telford United when they beat Alty 1-0 in a Second Round tie on 6th December 1986.

Darren Sheridan for Winsford? Ian Bogie for Port Vale? Gary Mills for Tamworth? Mark Cooper for Tamworth? Justin Edinboro for Spurs? Steve Burr for Macc?

Ian Bogie: no.

Gary Mills: no.

However, you are quite correct with the following names:

Darren Sheridan (Winsford United: 1991);

Justin Edinburgh (an unused substitute for Spurs: 1995);

Steve Burr (Macclesfield Town: 1988 & 1991);

Mark Cooper (an unused substitute for Tamworth: 2005).

So, still THREE characters to identify.....

Possibly, without any reference at all was Dave Bayliss in that Preston side?

Right, might be wrong here but did Richard Money (Luton) play for Liverpool against us in the 1981 FA Cup 3rd rd tie?

I don't think Mickey Mellon at Fl££twood was in the Blackpool side of the very early 80 but I think that Neil Woods (Grimsby manager) was a waste of space at Southport at some time in the early 90s, so him??

Also, I think I read that Bath's manager had played ofr them back in the day so maybe him as well?

And if Martin Foyle hadn't left York he would count, having played for Port Vale against us.

You are half correct...!

Liam Watson has played against Alty in an FA Cup tie.

However, it wasn't for Preston North End.

So, just who did he play for then...?

Ballers,

No to Bayliss; Mellon and Bath's current manager (Adie Britton).

However, Neil Woods has played against Alty in an FA Cup tie - but not for Southport.
Think of a 1980s tie at Moss Lane, which I'm pretty certain that you attended.

You are quite correct: Richard Money did, indeed, play for Liverpool versus Alty at Anfield back in January 1981.
However, he has also played against Alty in the FA Cup for another club.
Any ideas...?
