Brainteaser
« on: April 29, 2010, 04:23:40 PM »

A little something to pass the time during the off season. Each Thursday (maybe Friday), I'll post a brainteaser on the forum. It's just a copy and paste from an e-newsletter that I get. No need to reply as the answer will be provided, along with the next brainteaser, the back end of next week. Enjoy! The first one is as follows:

John's warehouse is hosting a maths competition against warehouses in the same area. Each warehouse can only allow 10 employees to compete. John and his colleagues are taking tests to determine the 10 best people to send. John did well, but tied with James for the last spot. His manager decided to set-up a one-problem challenge, whoever got it right the fastest would win.

Knowing that "H" is equal to 10, and T is half of M, how could MATH be 42, TEAM be 40, and MEET be 37?

A = 11
T = 7
H = 10
E = 8

?

Got M and T the wrong way round.

I think the biggest question here is why are these maths geniuses working in a warehouse?

H   10
E   8
M   14
A   11
T   7

How did others work it out - I cheated a bit using Excel and brute force!

MATH - TEAM = 2 so H - E = 2 so E is 8

M + 16 + T = 37 so M+T = 21 , T is half of M so T is 7 and M is 14

A is 11 from either Math or team.
