Altrincham FC First Team / A Question for the Old Timers
« on: February 10, 2024, 10:09:17 PM »
Well two really.

I seem to think that I went to an away game at Bangor City in about 1978ish but it was on a Sunday which would have been odd then. Am I right or is my memory hazy.
Round about the same era I think I went to Great Harwood away which was moved from a Saturday to a night game due to one of our cup exploits at the time.
I can’t find any records of either game including programmes which at the time I always purchased.
Any clarification would be really appreciated.

Many of you know that I live in SW London these days but the constant freezing temperatures and snow we have had recently have reminded me of a funny story, no doubt told previously.
It was New Year's Day in I'd say 1977 or 78. We always played Macc home and away over Christmas, it was before the APL started.

We were away on Boxing Day, there was a bit of trouble after on the way out with some fighting. Mostly handbags but punches were thrown. One of the Macc protagonists was a lad of about 16, wearing a long black leather coat.

I met up with my mate as usual in the Bridge pub about 1.30 for a couple. About 2.30 in walked the Macc team, the game was off, while we were in the pub it had put about 4" of snow down.
I left to get the train home to Dane Rd but the snow had stopped them running. As I left the station I bumped into Mr long leather coat. In that way football fans have with shared camaraderie I offered to help him get home to Macclesfield.

We got the 263 or 264 together up to the bottom of Dane Rd at which point I advised him he needed to change buses to get to Manchester. I thoughtfully put him on the 222 to Partington, he was so grateful I almost felt guilty as I walked home to my parent's centrally heated house in Sale just 5 mins up the road.

Absolutely true story, still proud of it to this day.

Anyone else had this letter today about the club not running the Yankee anymore? I thought it brought in a decent wedge, can't believe interest and promotion has failed like this.

Altrincham FC First Team / Halifax Walkers and the Pink Kit
« on: March 21, 2015, 09:57:01 PM »
So how successful was today as a fund raiser? Did the Fax walkers make it and still play a kickabout, how was the pink kit received by the fans.
A great gesture by both clubs, just wonder how it went. Sometimes it isn't just about the football.

Altrincham FC First Team / Statto Required

Despite the euphoria around yesterday from which I am gradually coming down from, I need some help. A Dartford supporting mate and all round football and gig attending obsessive has been to a Kent League game yesterday which finished 2-8, apparently his fourth 10 goal game. I have trumped him with the Merthyr 9-2 and Nuneaton 7-4 but he has now challenged me to a highest score draw contest. I cannot even recall an Alty 3-3 never mind a 4-4 or 5-5. Anyone?

Sorry if I'm a fussy old bastard but I keep seeing this on here and it rankles. No one is regarded as being before the mother of Jesus, or perhaps being celebrated prior to a certain American pop singer's appearance.

It is Prima Donna, from the Latin, now used sarcastically as in you think you are special but you are not.

Totally crap. Deserved to be beaten. Surely evidence that they should'nt be there at all.

The Irish would've made a better game of that. Ironic that Mexico play in green.

Anyone else watching the African final, will there be celebrations tonight in Gazelle Land?

I think all there would agree the ref had a shocker, deffo sending off for Seb Brown for the assualt on Senior, plus nothing done for the rugby tackle on him later. We gave AFCW too much space for a little while leading to the first two goals, no one would tackle for the second.

Second half, after we went two down we ran at them and scared the crap out of them too, we need to keep on with that and believe.

3-1 flattered them, we deserved better and who knows if they'd gone to 10 men as it should what would happen.

1400 gate! Yet again Wimbledon cheat on the split in a cup game, easily 1800+. Ask St Albans fans.

AND...for the doubters, yes I cheated and got the train there as time was tight, but I promise I walked home, 35 mins, not bad.

Altrincham FC First Team / I've Been to Rugby today.....
« on: December 27, 2009, 10:26:22 PM »
and it was rubbish, how can people watch such a stop /start go backwards game. Besides, when I played rugby at school we didn't have limitless subs, and as for the music after every score, its dreadful.
Twickenham is a nice stadium, good view etc, wasted on a stupid egg shaped game. No atmosphere as no one REALLY supports their team, its not life or death, just a jolly afternoon out. Hideous.
