Altrincham FC First Team / Re: Whos going chester on saturday?
« on: November 17, 2009, 10:32:57 AM »
Advice please!
I'm planning on going with a couple of chums on the train from Alty. Can anyone provide info on the best way to get to the Deva from the station?  (Chester CFC websites seem patchy on the subject).
I assume it's too far to walk? Is Taxi the best bet to get there? Is there a bus from the ground back to the station after the game?
Any advice would be great!

You've got several options depending on how athletic/fit or how large your finances are! ...

1.  To walk would be about 2.5 miles doing the direct route. This would be to walk up city road directly opposite the station entrance until you reach the junction at 'the bars' which is a very large roundabout with a block of offices in the middle. walking round it in a clockwise direction, the third exit is foregate street. Take this into the city centre walking straight on under the clock onto eastgate and then watergate street (after passing chester cross) until you reach the ring road. Go straight over and walk on for another 3/4 of a mile passing the racecourse on the left until you reach Bumpers lane on your left. The ground is signposted with a brown sign and it is a few hundred yards up there.

2. Get a taxi which will cost you about £3.50 (but obviously don't expect to get one back!)

3. get the shuttle bus which I believe still runs from the station to chester bus station and change buses to the Sealand road park and ride bus. This passes the end of bumpers lane and should stop. Some drivers don't stop (I know!) but even if you have to go to the terminus it's only half a mile or so back and there is a quicker way to the ground than going down to bumpers lane. As you walk back towards chester, take a right at the first traffic lights on to the industrial estate and the road goes round to the ground.

It's likely that you'll have to walk back to the centre of chester whichever way you arrive but there is a taxi rank at the bus station of you can't make all the journey to the station on foot.
My advice on the return journey would be to stop in at a pub (possibly Telfords Warehouse which can be found 200 yards on the left if you take a left at the Sealand chippy on the way back towards the racecourse) and get them to phone a cab for you whilst you sample a few frothy ones. sorted.

I was happy with a point at the end. ... It stopped a losing run,
The pitch was really heavy and I think the difference between full and part time is accentuated when the pitch is heavy...
Young didnt have his best game, but usually he is a rock.   I thought Danylick and Lawton put in a decent shift today.
Senior was ok but sadly Colin would only be a sub if I picked the team.
Coburn would be the first name on my team sheet. The guy gets us out of the sh*te game after game.
I thought Burns was ok for 45 mins but he was seriously blowing out of his ass when he got took off.
I can only asssume Chrissy Denham is not fully fit after injury otherwise why would GH take him off.
It has to be said Kearney is a big miss in the midfield.
Give the young lad Owen a break he only bloody joined the club about 48 hrs ago.
I wish we could close down the opposition midfield down quicker but as I say that may be down to fitness levels.
Its not the end of the world drawing with FGR they are not a bad team (they battered us 5 - 2 last season)
Keep the faith. We are 11th in the BSP. we would have been singing from the rafters this time last season.
See you at Chester. (if they are still trading)
Cmon Alty.

Good, sensible post. Have a G.

According to the BBC, Chester have revcieved a further 2 week extension to pay Wrexham and Vauxhall Motors. New "Deadline" is 30 November.

I'll be able to pop down the Deva to see the mighty Robins there one last time (at least!)  ::)

Much as it pains me, that was a very good FA Cup performance.

As for Charlton, was that some kind of betting sting?  What a joke performance that was, no wonder no one went!

Perhaps I might be somewhat bitter but I couldn't bring myself to read this thread.
I admire you magnanimity Ecky. You're a better man than me.

I just thought Vics tried hard and Charlton were shocking.

Probably why he brought the Accy chairman in to run the club on his behalf? (Or has Mr Whalley left now?)

Why are people referring to SC**thorpe? I wouldn't think we hate them enough to warrant the **? Is there any history behind this??

Are you serious?

Type your post again  :D

I don't understand  ??? ??? ???

It says a naughty word thats obviously not allowed on here and filtered. I do find it funny everytime someone writes SC**thorpe though  :)

Always reminds me of that saying "If Typhoo put the 'T' in Britain, who put the ....? (You can imagine the rest!  :D

I was also at the games against Barrow, Sheff United and Orient (as well as both away games against the latter two).
Was the Wigan game an evening match which was important in deciding the CL title, we lost 1-0 in the days the Golf Road End was uncovered?

Hi Redhill.
I'll answer to the best of my knowledge although I only started going in 1965 when I was 15 (as it cost a lot of money to get from Harpurhey to Alty on buses and trains!).
Here goes:

The Wigan 2-4 game was in the FA Cup played on a saturday (15 October 1966) and we were well and truly spanked. By the way, according to the programme (price 6d) the Red Robin Club was bouncing to the 'King of the Golden Trumpet' Eddie Calvert the previous friday and saturday. On sunday the star appearing there was Ted Lune from the Army Game series on TV! (I was too young to get in though!)

We were also beaten by Wigan AWAY on 17 September 1966 in the Cheshire League Challenge Cup and that score was 0-1 but that was a saturday too.

Our home league game with Wigan that season was Saturday 1st April 1967 and we won 2-1. Going into that game we were 4 points in front of Wigan with a game in hand and seven games to play so even had we lost we would have been favourites. After that game though we were 6 points clear of wigan who had 5 games left. Don't forget it was only 2 points for a win in those days!

If I recall correctly, we actually won the league with our 8-1 win against Rhyl on 10 April 1967.

The league games versus Wigan in 1965-6 were both draws so it couldn't have been them either (2-2 at home and 1-1 away) so the game must have been 1964-5 or earlier!

Conclusion? either you're mistaken or even older than me!  ;)

7844 against Orient - in the corner of the golf road end - had just opened turnstiles at that end of the ground and installed segregation.  I was a prgramme seller to Orient fans that day, inside that enclave.  Some bother when all flags were confiscated but tempers soon restored.

Two other big FA Cup gates:

8088 in the 4th Qualifying round in 1966-67 for a 2-4 loss to fellow Cheshire League side Wigan Athletic and 8462 the following season for a 1-2 loss to 3rd Divsion (i.e. League 1) Barrow.

More incredibly (given the profile of the competition today) Cheshire Senior Cup Final Second Leg 1966-67 Aty 3 Witton 1 (Agg 3-2) Att: 7290

For me, the best atmosphere at Moss Lane was for Alty3 Sheff Utd 0 (Att: 5137) - the Golf Road was rocking that night; much better than Alty1 SC**thorpe 0 (Att: 5176) when we were segregated to Chequers end.

I was present at the Wigan, Barrow, Witton and Sheffield games. Happy days!

Was stood on the grass bank at the side of the main stand (where the mausoleum is now) for the Sheffield match and was directly behind Barry Howards dribble and shot as we attacked the Red Robin Club end. The ball seemed to be going wide right when he hit it but swerved left to sneak in the corner. Fantastic. I think the crowd around us there who shared the view willed it to swerve enough  :)

The Witton Game brings back particular memories for me. Load of kids sat on top of the Red Robin Club roof and people climbing the floodlight pylons to get a better view in the crush (no segregation though! - half time when we changed ends got rather congested to say the least but not a hint of trouble). Witton had a pretty good team in those days managed by player manager 'strolling' Ken Barnes (ex City). Their blond Keeper (Mellor, I think) went on to play a lot of games for Fulham. They also had a future Irish international centre half Chris Nicholl (I think) who played at top level afterwards.

We'd already sewn the league up and this match (which we won 3-1 after losing the first leg 0-1 at the Central Ground) gave us (as we saw it at the time) the League and Cup 'double'! The Cheshire Senior Cup was a big thing in those days. (Note: It is today too when you win it!)

My punt would be for Irish international goalkeeper Bobby Irvine who almost singlehandedly helped to get us eliminated from the FA Cup by, amongst other things, throwing the ball into our net! Freddie Pye cancelled his contract following the match and told us speckys about it in the following (I think monday night) programme.

PS We didn't have tinternet in them days! :D

I can't understand why Wrexham and Vauxhall are not paid directly out of the £134,000 being withheld from Chester by the FA

I would have thought that it as that money is essentially Chester's and they have to agree to this happening. They haven't, so it hasn't. (could be wrong though ;))

I think we should be very flattered that Mansfield are so worried about us that they feel it necessary to try to drum up some bitterness between us where none previously existed.
Things like the Duffy is ill now he's fit scenario only happen if the manager is worried. I mean it's not as if we're going to change the way we play depending on whether he plays or not is it? We've barely got enough to fill the team sheet and the bench!
All I can say is thank God we don't act like that.
And thanks for the digs at GH - that too demonstrates he's going about things in the right way!
