I remember the 2nd round tie at York being cold, it was one of the only games played that day due to freezing weather. That was a few years earlier than the 4th round game.

actually i think you're right. 0-0? nothing happened? i just remember hoping it would end soon

The Freezing Idiots are back.....and now called Harbingers:

My votes for cold would go to Cammell Laird 3-2 defeat and FA Cup round 4 v York - in the latter  match I was questioned by police as to whether I was on drugs as I was only wearing a tee-shirt (and trousers of course).
the york game was the coldest i have ever been anywhere ever. some alty fans later formed a band called 'the freezing idiots' named after that day

it is lost in the mists of time why i didnt get up that morning, but i still slightly regret missing out on worksop 0 altrincham 7
3 sided ground and all

i dont remember much about my 1 visit to south liverpool except that the place was falling down and there was no-one there. late 70s sometime, and a couple of alty fans got in the programme for cycling there.

i asked my hyde supporting acquantance and he wrote this

"Hello!

Sorry about the late reply - this is the first time I've logged in since Friday.

In his first couple of seasons Leeds and Middlesbrough were after him so we put a ridiculously high price tag on him (something like £50k, but it might've been even more), but he's not lived up to the early promise.

I've wanted rid of him for a couple of seasons now, but our fans have always been split on him. Ask someone else and they'd be absolutely gutted to see him go.

He's one of the most frustrating players I've watched - just so, so lazy. He's unfit too - not in the sense of getting injured regularly, but coming off tired after 60 minutes every game. It's probably linked to the fact that our fans usually see him out at 3am on the morning before a game, although that probably says as much about our manager's discipline enforcement as it does Dale.

But he's scored 68 goals in 171 (plus 25 sub appearances), so he's definitely got the quality - if GH can get him motivated and fit then he'll be brilliant for you"

for what its worth i think this is where we are shopping now, players who have what it takes but havent really done it

Only 2,004 there. How strange. A disappointment to us younger  :o Alty fans that we didn't play in front of 3,000 + crowds all the time. Can you imagine if we were that good now what crowds we'd have?

you have to remeber that they were dark days in football with low attendances even at higher levels. examples? - chelsea were regularly getting 10,000 newcastle averaging 15,000. i knew people in those days who would sneer at you for liking football, and look at you in disbelief that you actually went to games. they all claim to support someone now though.
gazelle is also right that some weeks there would clearly be many more fans than another week but the gate given was always virtually the same.
