Altrincham FC First Team / Re: 21 Year wait Over
« on: November 10, 2015, 11:29:47 AM »

It happened for me back on 24th November 1973 when the Robins recorded a memorable 2-0 FA Cup triumph over Hartlepool at Moss Lane......and I'm still here almost 42 years later!

I was there too. I seem to recall there was quite a bit of argy bargy inside and outside the ground as was the way in the 70s.

I particularly remember that cup run which ended in the 2nd round replay against Blackburn on a Wednesday afternoon. It was during the 3-day week so no floodlights were allowed. I seem to recall the ground being packed.

Is his nickname "Broadway"? Are his parents Woody Allen fans?

Surprised that Parry is on the bench. I guess fitness may be a concern if he hasn't had many games.

Altrincham FC First Team / Re: Alty TV GoPro cam - 1st Goal Vs Grimsby
« on: August 19, 2015, 12:55:02 PM »
I think we'd have been furious if that had been given against us. Even with this brilliant view of it (well done Alty TV) it's not possible to say for sure if it was over. There is no way the officials could be certain and so they shouldn't have given it.

Inept rather than anything else but we'll have a load of inept decisions go against us before the seasons out. Nice to get something from what sounds like an excellent performance.

in normal play he can, but not in a penalty shoot out like this
Yes. That's my point.
I guess it's like Hamilton says. It's over whenever the ref judges it's over.
It looks like the keeper could probably have got control but didn't bother as he thought it was over once he'd made the initial save.

Another case of players thinking they know the rules but not actually knowing.

Seems a bit unfair. If the ball had rebounded out the taker doesn't get a second chance. So at what point is the 'penalty' over?

Based on his somewhat muted celebration it looks like he does that every game!

I'd still be on my lap of honour.

Bit of a co-incidence with respect to me reply to John Edwards in the other thread....

I was at Fratton Park when that 'Ours' picture in the website header was taken..... Iconic picture, great day for the club but the team got stuffed by Oxford!

Yep. Red and white stripes don't go down well in Pompey. I'll have to dig out an away kit.
Whereabouts in Portsmouth do you live, Number 23? My first job after leaving school was on Pompey's evening paper The News, quite soon after it relocated from the city centre to Hilsea, on the northern outskirts. Bit of a wrench leaving family and friends behind in Manchester, but well worthwhile. Great place to learn the ropes, and I'll always be grateful to the late Mike Neasom for taking me under his wing. The paper sold something like 100,000 copies a day back then and produced a sports paper (think it was called Sports Mail or The Green 'Un) every Saturday. I had digs in Southsea to begin with, then a flat in North End and finally a cottage-share in a lovely little village called Westbourne, near Emsworth. Pompey only attracted fairly modest gates but were pretty well established in the old Second Division (mid-70s). Shame how their fortunes have slumped, but fair play to the fans for the way they've stuck by them and turned out in numbers. Fond memories..
I live in Widley just over 'the back of the hill' but I work at the University in town. I know Westbourne and Emsworth is a favorite place for a pub-crawl.
I have a season ticket at Fratton Park - the fall from grace has been dramatic but the fans have stuck with the club which is back in the black and is being run sensibly (at last). Nice to be associated with two clubs being run by honest people with a practical, long-term view.
At the end of last season I was torn between wanting Pompey to stay up and the thought of seeing Alty at Fratton Park.

The News is still going strong and there is still a weekly Sports Mail - full colour now rather than the 'Football Pink' it used to be. I remember reading Mike Neasom's reports

A bit of an aside ... a friends son got a job reporting Havant and Waterlooville games for the Sports Mail, phoning in half-time and full-time reports (in the days before mobile internet access). Full time reports had to be called in as the whistle went to get the report into the paper as it was printed and distributed within an hour of the games ending. One week he called in his report of the riotous scenes as the H&W scored a 'last kick of the game winner'. The report was printed under an eye-catching headline and it was only after paper was in teh shops that he found out that the uproar was because the 'goal' had been disallowed.

Poor attendance record. Dreadful set of results. Good job I couldn't make it to Eastleigh away.

Have persuaded my missus and a couple of friends that a long weekend in Torquay would be lovely in April.
We'll be there from Thursday to Sunday.
We may find ourselves in the vicinity of Plainmoor on Saturday arvo. Anywhere near the ground god for a pre-match tipple?

Altrincham FC First Team / Next 4 games
« on: January 31, 2015, 06:03:10 PM »
Assuming there is no game next Saturday we have four very tough looking games coming up in February against 4 of the top 5 (as the table stands tonight).

How many points is it realistic to expect us to get from those?  I'd be reasonably happy with four. Six or more would be great.

Cheers for the reply. I hope we can reverse the score at their place. Berks radio didn't rate us back in August.
I was there and we played like a decent Conf. North team finding their feet in a higher division. We're better than that now.
