I think we generally perform well against them.  Certainly hope that we don't put them on a pedestal and that we go for the win.

Tend to agree but having said that I'd be very happy with a draw as well.

Really sharp performance at times tonight, our first goal especially was sublime. Contrary to some views on here I thought Conn-Clarke was excellent. Seemed to have time on the ball every time he was in possession, pulled strings and created dangerous opportunities consistently. Linney too, aside from his first effort, looked sharp, was weaving in and out of the York defence and was unlucky not to score himself. Credit again too to Ethan Ross for another superb save at the end.

York looked very dangerous going forward at times and made us look vulnerable under pressure in some situations but I thought we had them in midfield and in the final third as well.

Overall, a really decent point against a York side that are bound to get their act together sooner or later. Bonus that we've kept the unbeaten record and Kosylo and Amaluzor's legs have been conserved for the weekend. Roll on Borehamwood.

Altrincham FC First Team / The New Season
« on: August 04, 2023, 06:47:37 PM »
On the evening before the new campaign I thought it would be interesting to see what we all think a successful season would be for us this year?

For me, I think it comes down to improving on last year and conceding fewer goals. I'd be very happy if we managed to finish in the top half just to show we're moving in the right direction after going full time and of course a good cup run would be very welcome too.

We've had successful pre-seasons in terms of results and then gone 10 games without winning at the beginning of a campaign before. This result and performance means absolutely nothing in the grand scheme of things. Additionally, as Phil says, if there's a new pre season system we're following then I'd prefer that we're taking action to mitigate our customary slow starts to seasons at the expense of a few poor performances in friendlies.

Agree with Andrew on most of this:

I think saying we could easily aim for the playoffs next season is very unrealistic and would be an unbelievable achievement should it happen. Aiming for a top half finish and becoming a more consistent and settled side, however, is an achievable goal but difficult enough to be considered excellent progress in my opinion.

As for loanees, of course I'd love Maxi to stay with us but fear his performances will probably earn him a loan to at least a League 2 side next season.
Tyrese Sinclair has also proven he's extremely capable at this level and so I'd expect Rochdale to firmly have him in their plans considering the upheaval they're about to experience being relegated.

Chris Conn-Clarke is a very interesting one. Before his move to Waterford I'd have said there would be no chance of us ever seeing him return but it seems it's not gone too well for him over there to the point where he isn't even making their starting 11. We know how good of a player he is so perhaps a lack of confidence, poor management or not fitting into a system has contributed to this. As a result there may be less immediate interest in him from football league sides so there's potential for him to hit the ground running with us at the start of next season. I'd still be surprised if it did happen having said that.

As difficult as this season has been at times, the squad have gained invaluable national league and big game experience and I agree with Phil when he says this will only make us stronger as we go on. A couple of shrewd signings and being able to retain key players from this year and I'll be very optimistic of continued improvement next campaign.

Some superb Pitch level highlights from Gateshead of yesterday's game here. (Would love to see more of this kind of thing for our games, adding to the already excellent Alty TV highlights of course)

Lots of chances for both sides yesterday, unfortunately Gateshead took one of theirs and we couldn't with both sides playing some really attractive football.
Overall, we're still a work in progress but despite that have still had one of our best National League seasons this century. Would love us to finish 13th or above this year and hit the 60 point mark, that would represent excellent progress on last season.

I’m not sure it would’ve mattered too much. They were leagues above us and nearly every other side in this division..having said that there were times where we got in behind them and created chances. You just felt that even if we had scored they would’ve found a way to come back.

Not a bad night for us all in all. We matched them in the first half, I thought and then weren’t blown away in a manner that would be detrimental for Saturday.  Notts look League 1 standard and we had our moments. Swiftly moving on I’d say

I wonder if there are any plans to move our final reserve fixture of the season to Moss Lane on that day? We're due to be playing Garswood at home at 2PM but might be a good opportunity to see some of our youth prospects in action.

But Rochdale are defensively much tighter now  ;D

Rochdale fans saying Toby is head an shoulders above the rest of their team apparently. It's a shame the way he went but he was brilliant for us and can't begrudge him a move up a division. I'm sure an FL side will pick him if Rochdale go down

Hope to see Gould playing and the loan player from united. Welch Hayes and Gyasi  I’d expect to get some game time to continue to get used to the team and system and probably Pringle to keep him sharp but not necessarily 90 mins for any.

Aside from that it’s slim pickings but perhaps playing Jordan up front to see how that goes would be beneficial and I’d guess Osbourne would feature in some capacity as well.

Why? We’re going to most likely lose heavily anyway. We may as well try and make as much money from the fixture as possible to help fund the squad as we go on. We should be looking to pack in as many as we are (safely) able to.

I was caught out by this last year but Chesterfield, despite being in Derbyshire, are covered by BBC radio Sheffield. Our game is live on there tonight.
