Poole is a class above. If we aren't getting the most out of him then I think it should be a priority to see how we can rather than dropping him.

As I said a few weeks ago, play James up front with Jordan and only one winger. We've got two good full backs who get forward so let's play 4-3-3 with Harrop alongside Richman and Moult or Sheridan. This line up would allow us to be more direct, certainly a good idea whilst the pitches are so heavy.

40 minutes into 2018 over here in Nerja, Costa Del Sol so may I be the first to wish all my friends and fellow fans down at Moss Lane a very happy New Year. 3 points today boys and all the best for the rest of the season.

Poole is a quality player at this level and, certainly on Saturday and also on Tuesday, gets targeted and kicked to bits. Earlier on in the season he was getting a lot more opportunity to shoot from just outside the area but more recently he's been playing deeper.

Teams have obviously sussed out that the best way to nullify James is to man mark him and crowd him out, as you say, just as Warrington did this week. Move him forward as I suggest and it's not as easy to employ these tactics and I'd like to see some of the centre-backs in this league trying to handle James and Jordan!

I'll put the cat amongst the pigeons and suggest that rather than the 4-4-2 line ups suggested above we switch to 4-3-3! A good number of people on here are critical of James Poole but in my opinion we aren't getting the best out of him because he needs to be 10 - 15 yards further up the pitch, alongside Jordan. James scored 20 goals in his part-season at this level with Salford, so there's the goal scorer people are asking for in the other thread.

I also think the same situation of not getting the best out of a player applies with Jake Moult. He doesn't need to babysit the back-four as much as he does and should also be another 10 - 15 yards up the pitch. Remember the player he was when we got promoted!

I'd hazard a guess that most supporters would agree that our most successful teams over the last 40 years or so have been set up as a 4-3-3 line up, maybe it suits the pitch dimensions etc.

With this in mind, I'd have a midfield three of Richman, Moult and Harrop, with a front three of Poole, Hulme and Johnston (or Hancock).

Would imagine he'll play left back so Dens can play in midfield with Harrop maybe.

They started with great tempo and their number 10 was running things but we stood strong.

What a team performance second half. JJ is far more dangerous on the left. I would give Hancock a rest on Saturday as he has played every game and put Peers on the right as he looked lively when he came on.

I have been calling for Dens to play, mind due as a right back, but he was poor tonight. Gave his all but too many misplaced passes but he is on his weaker side.

Yet again stand out performances were Jones, Harrison and Richman ( he was everywhere tonight ). Also have to mention JJ and Hulme who give their all every single game.

Top team performance and great to have centre backs who give you so much confidence.

Really enjoying this season, even though we are in a tin pot league.

You forgot to mention another solid goalkeeping performance from Tony Thompson for the second game running in awful conditions. His handling was excellent and on the whole his kicking was top notch as well. Maybe you'll stop the constant demand that we need a new keeper!

Don't get too concerned over Perry. Ok he is a big aerial threat but he isn't the fastest creature on two legs and turns like a cruise liner.

Never convinced me when he was here and has had more clubs than I've got in my golf bag.

Kyle has a great left foot when he's given time on the ball. His greatest assets are conning refs winning niggly 'back to goal' free kicks and winding down the clock if you're holding on at the end of a game (he gave a masterclass in the the 2-1 win at Lincoln a few years back).
If you watch the Barwell highlights on the Evo Stick league website, he scored a cracking free kick last night!

He's just become a Dad again so maybe he was a bit knackered to play!

quote author=Evostik Shame link=topic=22686.msg267992#msg267992 date=1501965479]. Agree too that we don't have the 30-goal a season striker who will make a difference - hope nobody else has one either.

I think Shaw Lane have one!

I too thought Johnson looked the pick of the new players until he went off. He's fast, direct and willing to take men on and we haven't had that since Duncan Watmore left. James Poole is obviously a quality player and found some good pockets of space to pick the ball up in to create. Still unsure about the goalkpeeper and left back, but from what i have seen and heard I would start with this team against Stafford.

GK

Densmore
Jones
Harrison
LB

Sheridan
Taylor

Johnson
Poole
Wright

Hulme

Sadly James Poole is suspended for the first game following a sending off for Salford near the end of the season.

Don't normally do friendly games and hard to judge players on one game.

I would like to see a fit Richman alongside Taylor and Moult. However probably get away with playing only two centre mids this season.

Will be great at some point to see an attacking line of Miller,Johnston and Poole.

We defo miss Miller, I hope that we can get him back fit and playing.

Positives

Harrison and Jones both composed centre backs with height. Very calm on the ball which was great to watch.

Taylor hardly put a foot wrong and was everywhere. He will be massive for us.

Poole is a very good player but will drift in and out of games. He will do more than Lawrie.

Johnston dangerous going forward.

Negatives

Thompson was terrible at kicking and made me feel nervous. I wasn't impressed but hoping it was an off day.

Johnston needs to learn how to track back and get tighter. He was at fault for the first goal.

Omtolola does not look great.

We didn't look like we were going to score which disappointed me after hearing how attacking we have looked in other games.

Hulme is surely only a number 9.

Not quite sure how you could criticise Johnston for being at fault for the goal and not tracking back when he'd just been dumped on the floor by their fullback, for what should have been a free kick to us. The tackle on him leaving him with the injury that forced him off.

I'd go with taylor over moult's experience....who else is ahead of him??

Taylor has a lot of skill on the ball as demonstrated at Whitchurch, but the other night against Stockport, PP and some of the other players  were certainly getting annoyed at his poor positioning creating openings for the opposition. It's normal that as a young player he's going to have certain things to improve on. The new coaching staff will help him improve on his game, but it's going to take time. I may well be wrong but I just don't see him being picked over Moult, Richman and Sheridan when the season starts. I know that's an unfashionable opinion on here but it's what I think will happen.
Maybe unfashionable but I for one, agree. I'd also like to see room made for the Ex-TNS lad, Jones,

Let's have another look at him (if we can) before committing. We've signed far too many lads over the past couple of years that have initially looked decent.
I remember everyone getting very excited at bowerman when on trial

Please don't include me in that "everyone". Bowerman was one of the worst players I'd seen in an Alty shirt (although this was challenged a bit last season) and was made worse for me after Tolson ignored me handing him James Poole on a plate and pushing Sinnott into signing that clown.

I dont think there's been many signed in the last couple of years that looked decent at any time, never mind initially.
