Whenever I've seen Baines, he's looked a brave, committed and excellent defender (he's clearly a centre back and not a full back). One of our better signings from the summer. Singling him out for a slagging is as weird and wrong-headed as, say, not picking Lundstram in your best current Alty XI.

What on earth is Byrne playing at? Absolutely ludicrous.

It’s interesting to me to compare the reaction to that howler to the one Mee committed at Maidenhead. I’m not saying people should be piling in on Byrne now but he does seem to get an easier ride from Alty fans than other keepers.

Apply the same logic, in that case, to Toby Mullarkey please.

I love him as much as everyone else but he's played a no-look backpass, across his left-footed keeper, straight into a dangerous area. He also had the opportunity to clear it down the line with his own weaker foot a mere matter of seconds prior to that - but opted not to do so.

Byrne failed to deal with the situation... however Toby created it. We said the same thing with Mee regarding the bizarre backpass he received himself.

Are we SERIOUSLY discussing dropping Byrne after that? Lord, give me strength.

I'm not sure I understand what point you're asking me to make (or indeed why you're asking me to make it rather than just making it yourself).

What I was saying was that Byrne seems to have attracted weirdly little criticism for a horrendous mistake, which wouldn't have been true of other, less popular players. Toby has received plenty of criticism for his part in it so 'the same logic' can't be applied.

I've already given my view of the incident. I'll add that Toby was at least trying to retain possession, which, for better or worse is the Alty way. You seem to think he should have hoofed it up the line or out of touch. Maybe that's right but it would not have been the Alty way. What Byrne was trying to do is anyone's guess.

I have not called for Byrne to be dropped.

The fact that people are somehow contriving to blame Mullarkey for that goal rather proves my point about how Byrne can seemingly do no wrong.

In fairness both are equally to blame; Toby could have played a 5 yard pass, put it out, launched it long.

Ollie Byrnes slip turns Tobys mistake in to a problem.

Equally to blame? Really? I’d say Mullarkey was 10% at fault for the goal at most. It wasn’t a great backpass but Byrne easily gets to it first, only to usher it past him like a matador avoiding a bull. If Byrne had just cleared it with his right foot, as any pro keeper should be able to do, there would have been no issue whatsoever.

And I don’t think he does slip. He falls over trying to kick the ball with the wrong foot,

When was the last time a player scored 4 games on the spin?

I’m guessing it might be Elliott Durrell who scored in five consecutive games either side of the first Covid lockdown.

Quite astonishingly, we have re-signed Byron Harrison.

Surprised we didn't go for a hybrid model this season, to at least reduce the turnover of players during the summer, and transition to full time next season.

Totally agree

Yes

Weymouth used the hybrid model last season and it didn’t work out so well for them.

Parkinson didnt win for 20 games last season. Another ten defeats could be killer.

Time for an ultimatium. Beat Aldershot or leave.

I don't know why not winning for 20 games last season comes into it at this stage, given the subsequent events proved we were right not to pull the trigger.

I agree with Bath Alty - it's not inconceivable that we win a couple on the bounce and the table suddenly starts looking a bit different again.

This team has looked competitive away at the likes of Boreham Wood and Bromley - and gave the possible champions a good old fright too.

We haven't had the rub of the green and it's starting to creep into the mindset now. That's why we needed some older heads around the camp because a rot can very quickly set in otherwise.

Where's Lewis Baines? - I'd feel infinitely more comfortable with him and Toby at the back, in fact we know what our best back five is - we just need to start playing it now.

Baines is still out injured with the ankle problem he picked up at the end of the Chesterfield game.

The originator of this issue who assured us that she had evidence via screen prints of the comments has failed  / declined to provide same.
I apologise for any ongoing issues relating to this, whilst still believing that it occurred.
This is why I declined to identify the suggested culprit, whom I believe knows who they are and, I hope are suitably contrite

Yes I'm sure we all hope that the culprit in this particular affair is suitably contrite and will now keep their trap firmly shut. I wouldn't bet on it though.

Are Kaja and Sami injured? Neither in yesterday's squad.

Kaja picked up an ankle knock at Boreham Wood.

I know John Laidlaw’s site has a report and very good it is, but, how come our new all singing & dancing site does not have a match report? We have a preview for Boreham Wood then the next news item is a preview of Chesterfield visiting tomorrow.

Is there any danger that the continuity man could squeeze in a match report or maybe an interview with a happy manager, who must have been delighted at getting a point at the Wood as us fans were.

I find it very frustrating going on the new website.

How many times must I say it, “Attention to detail”, the team maybe full time but the rest of the club sadly isn’t yet.

The absence of a post-match audio interview with PP is my fault - I did one straight after the game but there was a problem with the recording so it’s not usable unfortunately.

Just listened to the interview with PP

I wish Flynny would ask the question  we want to know, and that is .. What’s happening with the registration of Olly Byrne

Hes not allowed. All questions are vetted

Is that true? I'm surprised if so.

I would be disappointed if they were.

I think vetted carries negative connotations but topics to cover in the interview are discussed before recording, that's entirely commonplace in any interview, in any industry.

Edit (to add): As it's an official club interview it's going to cover certain things, and steer away from others if it is believed to be in our best interests to do so.

Despite our increased stature in the game we do still have barely any external, regular press interest in the football club, such as a weekly set of questions from Altrincham Today or the Messenger (both of which we have to contribute to ourselves to get coverage) or the Manchester Evening News. External reporters from those outlets would be more inclined to ask the more challenging questions, but what I'm saying is don't expect it from the club (Brian Flynn or John Edwards) - I don't think their job is to put it on Parky in their interviews.

I've interviewed Phil quite a few times and never once been told what I can or can't ask him. As Andrew says, there's a certain tone you're looking to strike given it's a club interview rather than an external journalistic one but the interviews I've done have never been 'vetted' in any way.

Altrincham FC First Team / Re: Opening day Match Thread.
« on: August 08, 2022, 06:32:05 PM »
And just to go back to the crowd. I’m puzzled that some people think it was a below par attendance?

Opening day attendances early in August with so many people on holiday (see our great travelling support at Torquay last season) are always much lower than you’d think. 800-900 used to be par.

1,717 is great and further proof of our progress. I haven’t got reliable enough WiFi on our campsite in Cornwall to check but it’s possibly our highest opening day attendance in the past 4 decades??

Maybe just edged out when Exeter brought 7-800 and we got circa 1,800 against them a few years ago.

Edit: Exeter was 1,314 so Saturdays attendance is certainly nothing to be disappointed with.

I think there may have been more in the ground for York at home in 2018 but in terms of home supporters, it’s an age since we’ve had as many as 1500 on an opening day.
