Altrincham FC First Team / Re: New Striker - Could it be Senior?
« on: July 14, 2007, 05:22:50 PM »
I take your point that a target man would be useful and Senior doesn't score many goals. However, you can't deny that we lacked both pace and width last season and looked better for having him in the team.

You are absolutely correct regarding the dearth of pace and width in the team last season.
Would prefer to see us sign a target man....but Senior could be an option on the left wing.

...as quick as Ian Tunnacliffe could sprint....

Here's another one that's just come back to me....

Tuesday, 5th September 1995
Southport...1  Altrincham...2
Vauxhall Conference

Maunders had abandoned ship the previous May....and our first five league matches had only seen us gain two points.

1-0 down at Southport in the incessant rain...and it was looking grim.

Suddenly, a comedy own goal by a Southport defender gifts us an equaliser.

Then, in the dying seconds, the almost unthinkable happens....
Mick Carmody launches a 30 yard thunderbolt that crashes into the net via the underside of the crossbar...right in front of the away supporters.
Cue: moments of utter delirium and frantic running down the terracing at the open end....

For some reason, possibly the first relegation fight and due to a horrible display of gamesmanship and time wasting from Yeovil, I seem to remember being absolutely ecstatic at a last gasp Paul France header at the Chequers end. Won 1-0 in 93-94 I think, Kings return had galvanised us. I think, I may need Cult/Flynny confirmation.

Ballers,

Saturday, 19th March 1994.

I remember it well.

Darren Heesom floated in a perfect cross from a free kick on the right wing and up popped Paul France with a glancing header at the far post.
I recall dancing around in the main stand when that one went in!

After a miserable home defeat against Witton Albion in February 1994, we looked destined for relegation.
However, Rowlands was axed; King returned....and the dreaded drop was dodged successfully.

How can pace not give us a different option? It was a major thing we lacked last season and when Chris Senior joined us we shot up the table.

Sorry, just not a fan of Senior.

He might well add pace on the wing but I don't regard him as a central striker.

Personally, I hope that the promised new striker is not Chris Senior.

Too small for my liking.....and doesn't really give us a different option.

OK, here's the line-up on that photograph....

Tony Sanders

Stan Allan
Peter Eales
John Owens
Jeff Johnson
John Davison
Graham Heathcote
Ian Morris

Mal Bailey (with perm)
Joe Flaherty (slightly obscured)
John Rogers

How could anyone forget the legendary Joe Flaherty?
Came on as a substitute....and was booked within seconds!

Altrincham FC First Team / Your favourite 90th minute Alty goals.....
« on: July 12, 2007, 03:38:39 PM »
As it's relatively quiet on here today, how about reminiscing about some of the most memorable and enjoyable 90th minute goals scored by Alty over the years?

Here are a few selections:

(1) Altrincham...4  Southport...3
FA Cup 1st Round
25th November 1978

One of the best cup ties I have ever seen at Moss Lane.
Southport score to level the match at 3-3 with time running out.....only for Alty to regain the lead with only seconds left on the clock courtesy of a Jeff Johnson header from a Graham Heathcote free kick.
Onwards to Tottenham (and Ardiles & Villa) via Droylsden!

(2) Altrincham...3  Southport...2
FA Cup 1st Round
12th November 1994

Paul France pops up with a priceless last minute far post header to clinch the victory.
Onwards to Tottenham (and Klinsmann & Sheringham) via Wigan Athletic!

(3) Altrincham...1  Barrow...0
FA Trophy 4th Round
5th February 2005

Colin Little's sweet header at the Chequers End....right in front of the stunned Barrow hordes!

(4) Northwich Vics...1  Altrincham...1
Nationwide Conference
27th December 1999

Richard Landon produces yet another of his last minute goals to earn 10 man Alty a point at The Drill Field.

(5) Bradford Park Avenue...1  Altrincham...2
Nationwide North
9th April 2005

Alty are 1-0 down until Val Owen equalises in the 85th minute.
Then Rod Thornley nets a winner five minutes into injury time.
Onwards to the Play Off Final....and a return to the Conference.

So, any other suggestions?

Altrincham FC First Team / Re: Cavell Coo song?
« on: July 11, 2007, 04:23:06 PM »
Firstly I think Ecky's chant is brilliant and the clear winner.

Secondly we've had this right footed left back argument before..just before the 'cote took over the reins and re-introduced 'sub standard' left back Chris Adams and that left winger from Cheadle (can't remember his name but he was a taxi driver and then he broke his leg).

The balance these two players bought to the side meant rhe rest of the side was able to function brilliantly even though the left winger did practically nothing..when he got the ball he was able to take it on his left and pass it straight on with his left without turning like the titanic to get it onto a right foot.

It is far better to have a slightly worse player who is left footed than a brilliant right footed player who slows play down and loses possesion every time he gets it coz it's on his wrong foot...as proved by the aforementioned player change where worse players came in and we were a better side for it.

Look what happened when right footed Phil Neville played for england at left back.....rest my case.

Ayyyy thank you

Jezza,

Sean Smith is the name that eluded you.

So what was the chocolate coloured kit like then cult?

as if you'd go and see the streissmistress when there's footy on at ML!!!

Bury's kit combination of chocolate brown and light blue was almost as offensive to the eye as a signed photograph of Dave Ryan.

Didn't Coventry City wear something equally hideous and brown in the 1970s?

First impressions of the new faces:

Tinson and Lane: solid and steady but didn't have a great deal to do;

Sedgemore: very quiet game;

Berkeley: only played for the first 45 minutes and made little impression, to be honest;

Baguley: second half only but a decent showing - looks to have more promise than his brother!

Coo: major drawback - he's right-footed!

Whether to travel to the MEN Arena and pay £500.00 for a ticket to see Barbra Streisand.....or walk to Moss Lane and study Bury's chocolate-coloured away kit for free.

Any suggestions?

He looked pigeon-toed to me....

....and I have to say that he was sporting a good suntan.

Perhaps not quite as impressively bronzed as the likes of Ronnie Ellis, Barry Whitbread, John Davison and Phil Power in their pre-season heyday....but the signs are encouraging....
