He will no doubt be astonished when he reads this (!) but I have to say that I concur with our current chairman's advocacy of the 'null and void option', as expressed in this article:

Altrincham FC First Team / Mike Garnett RIP
« on: December 28, 2019, 06:43:55 PM »

I was extremely sad to learn today of the death of long-standing Altrincham FC supporter Mike Garnett (alias 'roytonmike' on this forum), who had followed the fortunes of this club both home and away assiduously since the late 1960s.

A familiar figure leaning on the perimeter fence at the Golf Road End just to the side of the goal, Mike was a regular and sagacious contributor to the Robins Review over many years and a veritable fount of statistical information in relation to the club and its players, much of which he was kind enough to share with me.

As a friend has just texted to me, Mike was fundamentally a good man with whom to watch and talk football.

My condolences to his family and friends (particularly his fellow Alty compatriots Kim Brocklehurst, Malcolm Riley and USA exile Howard Watts).

This evokes memories of a traumatic 5-0 defeat there in the FA Trophy back in January 1990:

Altrincham FC First Team / Vote for Terry Surridge!

As mentioned on John Laidlar's website.

An Altrincham FC institution, a splendid chap and a great servant both to the club and weightlifting:

Today's issue of the NLP includes a special eight-page supplement to celebrate 40 years of the National League which contains an interview with the former Alty player and assistant manager Graham Barrow.

He discusses his transfer to Moss Lane from Southport in October 1979 and how challenging it was to establish himself as a regular in midfield in such a formidable team.

Of his subsequent move into the Football League with Wigan Athletic in the summer of 1981 and the sacrifices that it entailed, he writes:

"I was on reasonable money at Altrincham while working as a heating engineer as well. The offer from Wigan and full-time meant I had to take a drop in income. I told my wife about it and she said it was something I'd always wanted to do, give it a go and if it doesn't work out then go back to it."

Altrincham FC First Team / Terry Murphy RIP
« on: August 18, 2019, 06:04:50 PM »

I note the death of the former Alty assistant manager Terry Murphy, a man whom older supporters will recall for his connections with Runcorn, Vics and Witton Albion respectively:

The then Alty manager John Williams appointed Murphy as his assistant for the start of the 1987/88 GM Vauxhall Conference season, reuniting a partnership that had enjoyed significant success at Runcorn.

However, they were dismissed after merely 10 games of the campaign (two wins; three draws and five defeats), whereupon Chairman Gerry Berman and his board of directors duly unveiled one Tommy Docherty Esq. as the Robins' new manager.

Altrincham FC First Team / Noel White

I applaud the news of the club's long overdue decision to honour Noel White's unparalleled contribution to Altrincham FC in the form of that impending commemorative plaque in the CSH.

That's a splendid tribute from Bill Waterson on the club website, too.

However, I can't help but wonder that he warrants something far grander than that. After all, this is actual Moss Lane royalty that we we are talking about here!

So, how about naming one of the stands after our greatest ever chairman? If Stockport County can do that for Danny Bergara....

Alternatively, the Noel White Community Sports Hall has a nice ring to it.

A trivia question there for the likes of such Alty savants as roytonmike and Management Guru etc.

My guess would be that it could possibly have transpired against, say, Macc, Vics or Runcorn during the North West Floodlit League era or even those days when the Cheshire Senior Cup semi-final comprised home and away legs.

And have we ever previously failed to score against the same club on four separate occasions during a season?

Any idea who was responsible for this 'retro look' at Edgeley Park yesterday?

Altrincham FC First Team / Last night's Altrincham FC AGM
« on: November 13, 2018, 07:13:04 PM »

Would any attendee care to offer a synopsis of the AGM, as I was unable to be present at the meeting?

I'm hoping that John Laidlar will issue his customary report of the AGM in due course, as I'm not holding my breath that the official club website will get around to mentioning it.
