I've just acquired a copy of the programme from the Kirkby Town v Altrincham fixture in the Northern Premier League back on Friday, 22nd January 1971 (Alty won 5-4, incidentally).

The Kirkby Town team included a certain John King.

So, has anyone got any memories of Kirkby's ground?
Did it have a track running around it by any chance?

They only lasted two seasons in the NPL: 1970/71 & 1971/72.

Altrincham FC First Team / Thirty years on....
« on: April 29, 2008, 03:39:33 PM »
It will probably make a few people on here feel rather old today when they realise that it is the 30th anniversary of Alty's first visit to Wembley.

So, set aside a quiet moment later this evening, pour yourself a glass of your favourite tipple and raise a toast to the following Alty legends (and Joe Flaherty....):

Peter Eales
Stan Allan
Ivan Crossley (RIP)
Mal Bailey
John Owens
John King
Ian Morris
Graham Heathcote
Jeff Johnson
John Rogers
John Davison.

Oh, and not forgetting Tony Sanders and Peter Warburton.

483
.....who caught the highly prized shirts of Cavell Coo, James Dean and the unforgettable Carlos Logan respectively when they were thrown into the crowd at Weymouth by the Alty players yesterday?

Who was the person who voted for Steve Aspinall in the Internet Fans Altrincham FC Player of the Season 07/08 poll....?

Is his mother a member of this Forum?!

I was a bit surprised by the absence of any tribute to the recently deceased Freddie Pye before the Salisbury game, a manager who was instrumental in raising the profile of this club.

Alas, I was just pipped at the post for the last remaining issue on sale by a jester hat wearing Nantwich Town supporter on Tuesday evening....

Therefore, if anybody does possess a copy of this publication that they are willing to sell, I would be delighted to hear from them via email or a Personal Message.

Well, that was a load of embarrassing drivel, wasn't it?

An honourable mention to Ryan Shotton for his performance but the rest hardly covered themselves in glory.

Nantwich played the better football and deserved to win.

At least when you get to the final of this competition, you might as well try and win it, especially against a team from three leagues below you.
Unfortunately, we were incapable of dominating the game.

When Sedgemore ambled up to take his penalty (with his socks inexplicably pulled down as if he had covered as much ground as Alan Ball did in the 1966 World Cup Final), you sensed that his underachieving career with Alty would continue with a miss.

Dismal.

489
Does anyone else remember watching Alty lose 2-1 against Nantwich Town in the Cheshire Senior Cup back in February 1976?

I have very distant memories of that afternoon but am pretty certain that our underperforming manager, Les Rigby, handed in his resignation not long after that defeat.

Did the legendary Dave Furnival appear for Alty on that dark day?!

Father Flynn, are you out there?

Altrincham FC First Team / Message for Mike Adams

Excerpt from John Laidlar's website:

Alty chairman Geoff Goodwin said today: "Added to that we have players mouthing off to referees from the Premiership downwards. It's all symptomatic of a lack of discipline and respect throughout the game."

Well, thank goodness our manager at Moss Lane doesn't indulge in behaviour like that!

I concur entirely with our Chairman's comments about clubs taking the 'easy' route of administration....but, to my mind, those highlighted sentences are immensely ironic...

492
If you have watched Alty since the early 1970s, then you will no doubt remember many stirring battles against Stafford Rangers over the years and recall what a force they used to be in Non-League Football.

However, on this afternoon's evidence, that has to be the worst Stafford Rangers team that I can recall seeing at Moss Lane.

We know that we've had a hard season....but spare a thought for those loyal Stafford supporters who are having to watch that every week.
You wouldn't bet on them finishing above Droylsden!

Alas, I believe that Vics still have to play them at home, so that should be three points for them.

Thank goodness for the finishing skills of Colin Little, as, had it been left to the likes of Senior and O'Neill to score, we wouldn't have won that game.

Anyhow, job done and some welcome assistance from Droylsden and Burton Albion.

Hope springs eternal.

Altrincham FC First Team / How we will avoid relegation
« on: March 21, 2008, 03:50:27 PM »
ALDERSHOT TOWN (A)
Result: 1-0 win

In scenes reminiscent of the ‘siege of Doncaster’ back in September 1999, the Robins somehow survive an onslaught on their goal from the league leaders, who hit the bar more often than Amy Winehouse.

With mere seconds of added time remaining, Aldershot keeper Nikki Bull makes a complete hash of a backpass from Lewis Chalmers and the ball trickles over the line to present the Robins with an amazing victory.

The Alty supporters later invade the pitch and carry Chalmers on their shoulders. Five weeks later, he is named as Alty’s Player Of The Year.

STAFFORD RANGERS (H)
Result: 4-0 win

Steve Bull lives up to his billing as the Kevin Keegan of the Blue Square Premier by totally bewildering his team with bizarre tactics. An early Colin Little goal eases the Alty nerves and then substitute Pat McFadden rattles in a second half hat-trick in only three minutes.

TORQUAY UNITED (H)
Result: 1-0 win

Casting his mind back to that fruitless trip to Devon back in December and recalling how Torquay don‘t like playing on a pitch with a drop of water on it, the grudge-bearing Brian Flynn brings his hosepipe along to Moss Lane and drenches the playing surface before the match.

A combination of that most inconsiderate incessant Northern drizzle during the game; Mister Flynn baying at the visitors like Dennis Birch on LSD and the Torquay players dreaming of their forthcoming FA Trophy final appearance in a lovely clean and dry kit conspires to turn the visitors into a toothless outfit.

In the 78th minute, Darren Tinson scores the winner with a stunning overhead kick a la Hugo Sanchez.

KIDDERMINSTER HARRIERS (A)
Result: 1-0 defeat

Alas, negativity sets back in again, as Alty refuse to leave their own half for the entire 90 minutes.
Steve Aspinall slices a clearance into his own net after 53 minutes and is promptly replaced at left full back by Richard Acton.

BURTON ALBION (A)
Result: 0-0 draw

Expecting a leisurely stroll and a comfortable victory against the Robins, Nigel Clough names himself in the home team’s starting XI.

However, in a brilliant display of foresight and inspired tactical acumen, Graham Heathcote counteracts this move by playing himself in the Robins’ line-up and doing a man-marking job on Clough that nullifies the Burton manager’s influence.

Alas, with only two minutes left on the clock, Heathcote is sent off for arguing with the referee about a drop ball decision but Alty hang on to earn a valuable point.

SALISBURY CITY (H)
Result: 1-0 win

A desperately dull encounter is seemingly heading for a goalless stalemate.

In the 81st minute, Alty win a corner at the Golf Road End but before it can be taken, there is an extraordinary incident when George Heslop streaks across the Moss Lane turf wearing nothing but a fez on his head.

Their concentration utterly disrupted and now suffering various degrees of post-traumatic shock, the Salisbury players fail to defend the eventual corner and an unmarked Greg Young heads home at the far post.

Meanwhile, Phil Taylor escorts George Heslop towards the Main Stand, the fez now covering a different part of Alty's Club Secretary's anatomy.

EBBSFLEET UNITED (A)
Result: 2-0 win

Distracted by their imminent visit to Wembley, the home side rest several key players and allow some members of the MyFootballClub website to play for the first team instead.

This strategy backfires horribly, as goals from Senior and Little emulate the scoreline of that joyous day at Stonebridge Road back in May 1980.

WEYMOUTH (A)
Result: 8-0 defeat

The Robins go into the game safe from relegation.
Meanwhile, Weymouth need to win the game by a margin of eight goals to stay up themselves, which would then condemn Northwich Victoria to relegation.

Astonishingly, the home side achieve their target.

Four own goals in the last five minutes by Robbie Lawton result in the Robins’ supporters chairing him on their shoulders in a post match lap of honour.

Altrincham FC First Team / Doug Peacock

One for those Alty supporters of a certain vintage here......but the Manchester Evening News on Tuesday reported the recent death of their former Non-League Football correspondent, Doug Peacock.

If you followed Alty's fortunes during those halcyon days of the late 1970s and early 1980s, then you will probably remember Doug Peacock's reports and articles on the Robins in the MEN and the old Saturday Football Pink.

I had many a chat with him in the Main Stand during those years and he was always worth sounding out about the latest Non-League gossip.
