There's a double-page interview with Shaun Densmore in today's issue of the NLP, in which he reminisces about his playing career.

Well worth investigating.

In the Sunderland squad (on loan from Everton) for this afternoon's League One Play-Off Final at Wembley is one Nathan Broadhead, who happens to be the grandson of the former Alty, Oswestry Town and Bangor City striker Tony Broadhead, whom some of us will have watched play for the Robins during the seasons 1971/72 to 1974/75. He was Alty's leading goalscorer during the 1971/72 NPL season.

Alas, four members of that 1978 FA Trophy-winning team are no longer with us.

Altrincham FC First Team / Beryl Fox RIP (former club employee)
« on: March 06, 2022, 03:53:45 PM »

During my weekly cheerful ritual of reading the death notices in The Messenger in order to check whether I receive a mention, I espied the name of one Beryl Fox of Hale who had died at the age of 92.

I recalled a lady by that name working alongside the late Derek Kennerley in the old Altrincham FC Pools Office, which was located under the main stand.

You used to be able to gain access to it via an entrance on Moss Lane and during the 1970s and 1980s I recollect booking on the coach for various away games there by pressing a bell which duly summoned either of those long-standing employees from behind a sliding window.

I have since been advised that the club's erstwhile secretary Dave Baldwin has confirmed that this is, indeed, the Beryl Fox who worked at the club (apparently, she took the club cat with her when she left her job!).

A blast from the past there. Anyone else remember her?

Condolences to her family and friends.

Altrincham FC First Team / Quickest goal that Alty have ever conceded?
« on: February 06, 2022, 07:23:55 PM »

Have Alty ever conceded a quicker goal than the one which transpired in truly gruesome detail inside 20 seconds against Woking yesterday afternoon?

I've been racking my brains through the increasingly blurred images of over five decades of watching Alty and the following goal at FCUM on New Year's Day in 2017 came to mind as possibly constituting the previous fastest goal against the Robins that I have witnessed:

(From John Laidlar's match report)

"FC United had barely kicked off on a bright but cold afternoon at Broadhurst Park when they found themselves a goal to the good. After an advance on their right flank, the ball found its way to Gilchrist, who scored with a shot from 15 yards past the exposed Deasy, with just 38 seconds on the clock."

Can anyone else dredge up any other candidates?

We need Brian Flynn's eidetic memory for all things Alty to shine here!

Altrincham FC First Team / Joel Senior

Unfortunate news from Salford City v Carlisle United last night:

"There was concern for Joel Senior when he stayed on the floor after he'd stuck out a leg to stop Thomas-Asante, and a stretcher was needed to take him from the pitch."

Altrincham FC First Team / 60 years on...

The last occasion on which Alty played a match on Christmas Day:

25th December 1961
Cheshire County League

Winsford United 1  Altrincham 1

Alty goalscorer: Paddy Fagan.

I wonder if there are still any Alty supporters out there who attended this fixture....or have ever experienced watching the Robins play a match on Christmas Day during another season?

Presumably, this signifies that Trafford Council may have been persuaded to increase the capacity for this fixture?

On this day 40 years ago.

Does anyone recollect anything about this nondescript 0-0 draw other than the freezing conditions?

I'm still astounded that this match ever took place:

Extended mix....

(Just a bit of gallows humour. Please don’t send an anonymous email to Trafford Council complaining about it…).
