Altrincham FC First Team / Ernie Fryer RIP
« on: November 28, 2022, 04:09:38 PM »

As reported on John Laidlar's website, the former Altrincham Fc director Ernie Fryer died last night at the age of 84.

I believe that he was in the same primary school class as the much-missed George Heslop.

£4.5k to the winners at this stage.

Tom Peers is bound to score the winning goal...

Altrincham FC First Team / John Connaughton RIP

Sad news regarding the death of a genuine Alty legend, who was a key member of our Alliance Premier League title-winning teams in the 1979/80 and 1980/81 seasons respectively:

Another former Port Vale and Alty goalkeeper pops up on some of these images, namely Trevor Dance:

The World Cup nonsense begins:

Also keep an eye on our scheduled home fixture against Maidenhead United on Tuesday, 13th December which clashes with one of the World Cup semi-finals.

Oh, and our home match versus Eastleigh on Saturday, 26th November would be postponed if they defeat Boreham Wood in the FA Cup First Round on Saturday.

Panic stations already in Somerset.

No doubt he will resurface as a BT Sport 'pundit' in the very near future.

The heinous Mark Cooper is reportedly being linked with the vacant role.

With both teams having been unceremoniously eliminated from the FA Cup at the first hurdle, is there now the potential to move the scheduled fixture on Tuesday, 1st November to the following blank Saturday?

That may well suit part-time Wealdstone more and it would surely benefit us in terms of attracting a higher attendance.

A nice refresher for Ollie Byrne and (hopefully) another step on the comeback trail for Ross Barrows:

Altrincham FC First Team / Brother, Can You Spare a Dime?

I notice that the following latest fundraising scheme was announced via the club's website yesterday:

https://altrinchamfc.com/blogs/news/alty-for-all-new-crowdfunding-campaign-gives-fans-an-opportunity-to-join-the-journey

I believe that this new scheme is the brainwave of our American and Canadian directors?

I presume that it's a revised incarnation of the proposal at last year's AGM by which the club's current shareholders were asked to vote for an issue of 'B' shares to up to 100 interested parties, each of whom would buy shares to the value of £7,5k, thereby yielding a pot of £750k to fund the transition to full-time football?

Those investors would then be rewarded with a dividend of sorts 'when' the club achieved promotion to the Football League, all of which seems rather disrespectful to the club's exisiting shareholders (but that factor probably isn't on our colonial friends' radar).

Altrincham FC First Team / Alty Legend...?

Tremendous research, as always, by Terry Rowley, however I'm not convinced that Bobby Irvine deserves the epithet of 'Alty Legend'!

There must be some readers of this forum who were eyewitnesses to his notoriously abject performance during a 4-2 defeat against Wigan Athletic in an FA Cup Fourth Qualifying Round tie staged at Moss Lane on Saturday, 15th October 1966?

Irvine’s alarmingly calamitous display, which had contained two absolute goalkeeping howlers, elicited the following post-match comments from Alty’s enraged manager Freddie Pye in the Manchester Evening News Football Pink: “I know Irvine is capable of better things. I don't mind players having bad games but he chose the wrong game to do it in."

The dismayed Pye’s retribution was swift and decisive. In the following Saturday’s issue of the Robins Review, he reflected on the Wigan Athletic debacle and, in particular, Irvine’s error-strewn nightmare: “I cannot understand how a man with First Division and International experience could have chosen this game to have such an off-day. He will never again make such mistakes in an Altrincham jersey. His contract was cancelled this week.”
