And who would you have in a non-league superleague anyway?

Terrible decision this game.

In normal circumstances, perhaps, but Pre season - for many if you don't own a podcast or yellow jacket - has been the only game we could see live in 14 months.

To put a game away, that doesn't have a train station, is 6 hours by public transport, is a very poor decision. Done for the benefit of directors, not fans.

There is little footballing benefit that could not be achieved closer to home. If the lads want a night away, go to Blackpool.

If you want a day at the seaside, try Southport.

I seem to remember that Chester "City" have a similar away day most seasons, and of course Alty have previously been to Cliftonville and Isle of Man. If Alty are aiming to become more professional, these away day team bonding exercises could be worth while - though I would draw the line at British Columbia! And don't forget South East based Alty fans haven't been able to watch the team either after being denied entry to a certain other Essex club... I'm sure there will be local games we can attend, all being well. (Come to think of it, local fans are one up, having had the chance to go to Nantwich).

Oh, it was that one about Graham Brady, and "Hashtag" writing to him and all that. Personally I've no objection to it but - you see where I'm coming from.

Since you ask...

Obviously I think it's a negative thing, but not entirely surprising - bad ideas from the USA tend to find their way sooner or later, and besides, for most of the history there has not been automatic relegation from the football league. I suspect also that the money lost from no fans at matches forced the matter (and consider, for example, that Arsenal were making as much on one match day (allegedly) ass Sunderland did in their entire season - when they were in the Premier League). People who asked for these restrictions must understand that there will inevitably consequences, and I suspect (though have no way of knowing) that this was one of them. Of course, when the fourth division was a closed shop, crowds received a significant boost with  the introduction of playoffs and automatic relegation, with the clubs that have come in getting more fans than the weaker football league clubs used to get. It won't necessarily be as bad with this proposed closed shop, but it may get a bit stale after a while.

As for what should be done, I'm not sure that the authorities should get involved. For safety issues such as after Hillsborough, yes, but what possible basis is there for them to tell businesses how to run their affairs? they don't have relegation from the Highland League either. As for the FA etc. banning them from competitions, I suspect they won't be that bothered about being banned from the League Cup or not being allowed to give up their players for international matches, and will further believe (probably correctly) that an ESL is a superior product to the PL (I mean Bournemouth? Come on!). It is hard to see an alternative other than trying to persuade them to amend or abandon their plans by making them a better offer - which could be what this was about anyway, despite their protestations.

In any case this has been a long time in the making. There was a manager sacked from Spurs late 70's early 80's who despaired over the lack of loyalty shown by the club compared to what would have been expected in the past and when returning to White Hart Lane (as I remember it), quipped "there used to be a football club there". And in 1986, we only got automatic promotion to the fl to try and pacify the big clubs and see off a threat of some sort of breakaway.

From a non-league angle, the interesting question is, will all those United fans tearing up their season tickets (if indeed it is a significant number) consider watching clubs such as FC United and other non-league clubs?

Flippin eck Hugh... do u not sleep?... just seen all your replies on various threads from overnight... maybe we should refer to u as 'the Cat' as you're up all night or the new 'Statto' with all your facts & figures... anyway, amazing use of the forum...

We are all entitled to our own opinions (u & i & all)... i was gutted yesterday (like lots of fans) and acknowledged in my piece we've had loads of injuries & would have taken staying up as main goal this 1st season back in the top flight... HOWEVER, as i also stated 'in Parky we Trust' (still) BUT he does have a BIG summer ahead of player recruitment to move us to the next level... roll on the next game... COYR!

I identify as a cat. :) (That'll confirm Phil "the steward's" suspicions...)

Should be an interesting Summer anyway, and hopefully something worth waiting for next season. (Incidentally, one of my favourite Alty memories was the day we were on Statto's "Eat My Sports).

What on earth are you on about you profoundly odd creature?

Who is Julian?

How are my politics relevant to the thread

Bizarre!!

Goalkeeper(surprised if you don't know to be honest). Sort of thread you'd start isn't it. And not strictly Altrincham fc first team related.

Miaow!!!!!!!! (Tempted to comment on your bizarre ad hominem but won't...)

Incidentally, I made a mistake about the incident at Stevenage. It was actually us scoring a goal (unusually at Stevenage). Our friend Julian thought it should have been disallowed for offside and started to run over to remonstrate with her I must admit I don't know her name). Naturally there was some banter directed at him from the Alty support gathered behind his goal. All in good fun (I think). A female liner was probably quite a novelty at the time. I don't know if that was the first occasion we had one at an Alty match - I would think one of the first at least.

Nb to be honest, Phil, it's more about you going on about Labour party policy on the Altrincham fc first team forum after certain people had been on my back for going off topic by posting about health issues (which just happened to be having quite a big effect on this club). Just the other day, Caspar (or Casper) said that this is not a political forum. Not (entirely) true, seemingly. But if it is true, it should apply to people besides me. Just saying.

How many players would you keep and pay a Full Time wage next year if its a case of FT or leave, less if we can keep some PT

I have 8. Thompson, Senior, Hannigan, Smith, Kosylo, Colclough, Hancock, Hardy

No Mooney - controversial!

Certainly there have been problems with the global economy for some time. I don't believe we ever recovered from 2008 in a meaningful sense, and in the USA for example, increasing prosperity has not been seen since the 90's. I was worried about the economy anyway because of extraordinary financial measures in response to the financial crisis (QE etc.) which continue to this day, and I was also worried about financial pressures from the demographic crisis (of an ageing population. I would say that global free trade between countries (essentially, regulated capitalism) has brought more people out of extreme poverty than anything else in history, and levels of extreme poverty had been at historically low levels. However, this has been comprehensively reversed by the events of the past year, and the UN expects somewhere around 100 million people (130 million) to be forced into extreme poverty by these restrictions. What worries me is that there appears to be no end point. My understanding is there are plans to carry on with restrictions until the whole world has access to the covid jab. And after that what about the variants. "Vaccination of the vulnerable was supposed to be the way out, but it's just not happening, and it looks like some form of restrictions will remain after June. Czech Republic locked down hard initially but could not afford to do so again, and it is a worry if the plan here is to continue in a similar vein until the financial situation becomes so disastrous that it is just not possible any longer.

I used to think the song was "oh Bandy Bandy, he signed for Alty fc in a pile of...."

I seem to remember his wife was quite involved with the club too. And one time he got injured going into a barrier - running through brick walls for the club and all that. I don't hold it against Robbie Savage either, Then again I didn't hold it against Stuart Terry. Well, not really. And speaking of which - Hulme's "disrespectful" comment about Peers (like he would be the only one) - oh come on. What about Brian's interview with Rod and Gary Scott a bit sgo. Chris Adams on the phone to Rod and he told Brian - "he was one of the poorer players to be fsir"! I don't think any worse of Rod for that. It's just banter!

Altrincham FC First Team / Re: Scoring directly from a corner
« on: April 18, 2021, 03:50:17 AM »
Re. Stuart Coburn v Runcorn, my recollection was that it was a freekick from our own half which bounced and aided by the wind looped over their keeper into the net. My other recollection of this game was that Stuart also saved a penalty!?

Yes he scored and saved a pen that day!

Sending us to the top of the league, if I recall. It was a freak goal, also aided by the extraordinary slope on the pitch.

A funny thing, twice I've been at a match when a keeper scored, didn't see either of them properly. Runcorn - Stuart was taking a goal kick/freekick with the slope and possibly the wind. I took my eye of the gme, assuming I wouldn't missed much. Turns out he'd only gone and scored. And at Carlisle - Glass - bizarrely I saw an Alty fan who knew me - I forget who - a scramble at the far end, someone put it in, most of the home end (who weren't too keen on Knighton) ran on the pitch - and I only found out it ws the keeper when I got home.

A bit similar today in fact. TT was going to take a goal kick. TT! So I went ot get some milk - from the other side of the room - and we'd conceded before \i got back - I couldn't believe it!

Amy has taken over having initially been appointed as AR when the initially appointed Referee got injured.

Rebecca is the first female to be appointed to Referee in the EFL

Yes. Astonished it hasn't happened sooner really. I remember at Stevenage there was a female assistant referee (or liner by your leave). Julian was playing. They had a goal disallowed for offside - "you big bully Julian!" I must admit it seemed funny at the time. (You and your politics, Phil :) )

Altrincham FC First Team / Re: The 2021 Fan Survey
« on: April 18, 2021, 03:24:29 AM »
If you want to get accurate information you've got to allow sensible options

Q5 Which social media channels do you use to follow Alty. None of the above is not allowed and your not allowed to leave it all blank

Same with the question regarding how often I want to be notified as to what is going on. Never is not an option.

Poorly constructed survey questions is one of my pet hates. Sorry!

So it wasn't just me then! Still, I'm not holding it against anyone, any more than GH over Jamie Robinson. If we wanted everything to be dead professional, we might watch City/United/Liverpool etc.... the charms of non-league. Anyhow, I hope they found the info useful.

I remember a section in Nick Hornby's Feve Pitch, when he described going to Cambridge City, and they played match of the day ob the tannoy, and sometimes it wound down, and everyone laughed. And at Maidenhead (before they went big time) there was a simple old fellow who used to ramble round the ground, and had to leave early on midweek games beacause it was his bath night. There's a lot to be said for amateur.

The Crewe game was actually called off for 3 players being on international duty: Neil Lennon with Northern Ireland, and Rob Edwards and Robbie Savage with Wales

Robbie Savage? Wow, one of my favourite players, and i have no memory of it! Eat My Sports was probably my favourite - Angus Loughran, Alfreton Town (before they went big time), Ricky Harris - what more could you want! Wayno will tell you about it! :) Wayno, I remember the Barnsley game, you said you knew you were getting old because you couldn't be bothered going on the pitch as it was muddy. I suppose you don't get asked for your age any more... old chap :) Northwich away was good as well, and the bargain booze on the way back to the station.
